Yep. I believe the term is called "Vanity"

Yes folks lose it when Rolex is mentioned but rather than be a fanboy for the brand understand why folks have the attitude they have.
Too many people think Rolex "is the best watch in the world" and is simply far better than anything else and all that magic in the watch is worth the outrageous asking price.
If you buy it with your eyes open and look at it as an investment which will bring back way more than you paid for it then that's fine. However the great majority of Rolex owner buy it for reasons other than that.
If you have ever visited Geneva on the Plan-Les-Ouates and seen their campus and seen how much money they donate to various things you will know what you are contributing to when you buy one.

This is one of those hidden gems that only come around once in a while, an Invicta that isn't junk.
This is there version of a Moma, and a Tag, 2824-2,sapphire chrystal and black coating is at least ten years old and not a mark on it, an all around great watch ,and then they ruined it, later versions had quartz movements, and cheesy mop dials, but this one, if you can find one on Ebay is hundreds of dollars more than the other versions. Yup even Invicta can make a good watch once in a while.
The other one is a Jaques leman, they used to be on the watch shows when they could get movements from Valjoux and ETA, this one has a high grade 7750,great fit and finish, and it also was a bargain, but the older ones like this are few and far between.
Yea, Invicta was still making some great pieces are late as maybe 15 years ago or so. I had their Swiss Diver which I would put up against any watch on the market period. It was that good and was a certified Chronometer. I think it was around $900 which was a mint for an Invicta. They also used to sell these jewel encrusted watches for around 3 grand or so back then.
These days it's all junk.
When I was looking for a dive watch back in 1999, I asked two North Sea divers witch watch they would recommend.
Both answered Rolex, either the Submariner or the Sea-Dweller.
It is one of the tools that you bet your life on. You want something you can trust.
A while later I found a Sea-Dweller in the local Rolex store. I was looking for a Submariner, but there was a six month wait for those.
He had two Sea-Dwellers in the shop.
I tried one on, bought it, and all those years and 140+ deep dives it is still on my arm.
It never fails me. Attachment 348925
Most professional divers use a pro type timer depth gauge which is what they depend on for their lives. Most save the Rolex for cocktail time at the bar. There are loads of serious watches for casual diving or as a backup for pro's like Rolex or Aquadive and Seiko and Doxa and Sinn and the list goes on and on.
I know of no Pro diver who would depend on any "watch" as a primary tool for timing during working dives.
Attachment 348928Dive computers die. I’m om my 3rd one. You usually know how deep you are and where, so this leaves time. And a watch is a great back up.
Attachment 348928
Well, of course they die. Many quartz based dive watches and computers have the date the battery was installed engraved on the back and most change the battery religiously on a set schedule. As far as just stopping cold good ones shouldn't be doing that. A good Suunto or Cressi should be very reliable.
Absolutely, but every once in a while they sneak a good one in, but not often....
My family has had fun with time capsules at our camping land. Long story but we put a questionaire in and one of the questions the last time was when will the watch quit? The closest one won the watch and you had to be present to win.
I won!
It is a little small for my wrist so I will have to get a battery and give it to one of my grandaughters.
Let me add my two cents about Rolex, my parents bought me one when they went to Switzerland, a day just (sic) with a white gold bezel, I don't know if they all have that, but be that as it may, to make a long story short, this was the worst watch I ever owned, as far as keeping time. I sent it back to Rolex twice and it still didn't keep time well, much less than being a superlative chronometer,. The third time I added a little letter asking how they got their reputation as being one of the best watches in the world, when I had to send a brand new watch back three times in a row, and how was it that this was a certified chronometer, did they not check? That time it came back working properly. If my life depended on it, I would use the Sea Vulture over the Rollie. Makes you wonder, one of the worst watch companies made a watch that I would bet my life on over an overpriced cult icon. JMHO
Any "good watch" can come off the production line with issues. Rolex is a mass produced watch. It's not as if it was custom made. When watches come off the line they get a certain amount of regulation but jarring in transit, magnetic fields and sloppy production and much more can cause a watch to run poorly no matter the brand. Reputation can be bought and mean little.
Personally, over the years, I've had plenty of issues with "very well respected Swiss brands" and what was worse was the treatment by their authorized factory service centers and incompetence.
You want a watch that runs great out of the box and doesn't cost much? Buy a Seiko or a Citizen. Right now I'm wearing a Citizen Diver which runs to within 3 seconds a day and it cost me less than 600 bucks.
I couldn't agree more. Lately I've been seeing so many "hey look at me watches on most of the watch forums, and I don't care whose feelings I hurt with this comment but can anyone tell me what's so special about the Royal Oak from AP? Personally I think it's one of the ugliest expensive watches out there. Of course you're opinions may vary....
It blazed the trail when it comes to watch design and became an instant classic. You may or may not agree with that but you know it's like when someone told you to eat something when you were a kid and you didn't like it and they told you, you should LEARN to like it.
Har har.
Yeah I know it was Greold Gentas so called masterpiece, but still not for me.
I have one Rolex and I hate it. It was my fathers watch and I hated him. Plus it’s ugly. I feel compelled to keep it because it was his. But looking at it reminds me of him. Plus, it’s dated and ugly anyway. I’d like to trade it for a thousand other watches I can’t afford. But it just doesn’t feel right. So I don’t wear a watch now.
I'm wanting to get a nice dress watch for formal events, normal day activities I don't wear one though. Wanting to get a Cartier Tank, however think that might be silly with how little I would wear it. Might look at the Sieko tank alternative.
Seiko makes more models than you can shake a stick at. They make many thin dress type watches that are very affordable.
I think spending a mint for a watch you only wear maybe once a month or less is crazy unless of course you be a multimillionaire and it's just chump change to you.
So here's my story about this: I knew a guy who owned a pretty large construction outfit and he owned a solid 18k Patek. He finally thought, why did I spend so much for a watch I wear 3 or 4 times a year and it sits in a vault the rest of the time. So he started wearing it every day and he be a hands on guy who likes to get down and dirty with his concrete crew. The watch in short order looked like it well, fell into a cement mixer. I thought it was blasphemy to wear it like that. He thought he was getting his money's worth out of it.
Go figure.
When I was looking for a dress watch I considered the Rolex Day-Date 36 but went for an old Tudor, the Rose logo they had before the shield.
It is a wind up.

I had a Suunto dive computer but the strap broke…
maybe just bad luck, but now I use a different brand.
Another dive computer just went black, beyond repair. During a wreck dive :)
That made things interesting…
Just saw an ad by Timex for their new top of the line. Almost $1000 for a Timex. Would you spend that much for one? It's Swiss made but for that price the competition is very keen.
That the Giorgio Galli S2 Automatic?
Wouldn’t spend that on that watch. No date, no numerals, a lil too dressy for my taste.
I have the S1 which is half the price. They spent so much on the injection molded case the rest of the watch is cheap looking though it has a good Citizen mvmt. Maybe the S2 overcomes that but when it comes to watches name means everything and Timex doesn't have chops for that price range.
Agreed, I am looking for a timex James Brand, for my son James, but that’s a limited edition still half that asking price.
Japanese movement in it @ 21 jewels, but it’ll fit my son’s wrist, and age.
If I find one, I’ll post it up.
Scored on eBay, brand new and don’t tell my wife what I spent,.

Japanese movement, titanium case and sapphire crystal, his first mechanical watch, and his name on a limited edition run of only 1000 made.
Christmas covered in November.
Turning him into a watch buff I think..
Cheers.
If you stick with their "better" watches meaning around $400 they have some fantastic bargains like the Expedition Series for instance.
Yes, this one is right in that range. Call this one more of a field watch, but it’s in line with the Expedition series for ruggedness, I hope. Like his dad, he’s hard on his watches. The titanium should handle his youthful misdeeds..
