I carry a small 8L hiking day trip backpack practically everywhere with me. Usually have my headphones, charger, pens, pencils, work ID, work keys, wallet, nail clippers, and thermos. Plus the random odds and ends of everyday life. It's usually to big for me but I am ever the boy scout and the rare occasion I need the space it's proven itself invaluable.
I carry an 'Andy Strapz' messanger bag with me most places. I bought it once I read the bit that said you could fit a full face bike helmet in or two six packs of beer (half a carton). That half a carton bit has been tested out and has proved to be true, but I only wear an open face on the bike so I can't vouch for that bit of the advertising. The bag is made of the same material as used in oil skin coats 'Driza-bone'. It has two side pockets and a main front pocket that carries my everyday items.
Everyday items that stay in the bag are an A5 sketch book and pencils, notebook in 'roo hide case with pencil and penknife attached, 3 peice O'brien Irish 'Rover' whistle.
Things that get chucked in after that are usually just a 'phone, wallet and keys for quick outtings, for somewhat extended trips I throw in the pipe and tobacco and what ever else might be required for the trip i.e strops, knives, novels...beer :)

I have a man purse, but when you live in a large city and don't own a vehicle you pretty much need one unless you have very large pockets.
I work from home and when I have to go someplace I'm generally driving, so pockets are all I ever need. When I used to live in the city and use public transportation for work and school, I had plain old backpack (it was whatever they were selling at Target that day, so don't ask what brand it was) It had a small pocket that was obviously designed for a student. It had pockets for pens and pencils. I kept my calculator there (it was something I used a lot more at work than I did at school) and a few boy scout items (first aid items, a length of line and a leatherman tool) and a compass*. Then it had a large cargo pocket. Since I used it for commuting, it was generally stuffed with reading material (whatever book I was reading, plus a newspaper and a magazine). I suppose I would have carried my cell there if I had one at the time, as well.
* the compass was something I started carrying while visiting New York. My BIL at the time said that when you come up out of a strange subway station, you're often turned around and it made it a lot easier to figure which way you were going without having to go to the end of the block and see a street sign. I took his advice and whenever I traveled to Europe (or any large city for that matter) I always had it with me.

Every time I found myself thinking that I realized... Hey! you do have that!
I even took a cue from a few of you and I packed along my pipe and a bit of tobacco. I was quite happy when I found myself taking a nice stroll and was able to break that out.
Only advice. "Don't leave it hanging on the back of a chair at Starbucks and walk out without it!!" It takes some getting use to so you might not want to keep your wallet and credit cards in it for awhile!!
More than likely if you put your wallet in it, it will be constantly in your mind that you have your wallet in it and you won't leave it anywhere that is out of your direct line of sight and attached to some part of your body.

I'm not a fan of the man purse, but I am a fan of the appunto. I've wanted one for a good deal of time but am just to cheap to buy it.
But mate...What about the beer?! You can't put beer in am appunto....! :)

Mick has a very good point. Thats one of the three main food groups... Beer, meat, pie.
