Looking through Texas gun laws for the last 30 minutes, it looks like carrying a long gun is not a problem.
You would probably be arrested for "disorderly conduct" or some such if you tried to make a point out of it.
The law doesn't say you can. It mostly just doesn't mention long guns.
Yup. Used to live in hurst also.
The issue is open carry is not allowed here in Texas. to carry it MUST be concealed. Hard to do with a rifle.

P.S. You should come down for our next meet up. I drive up to seagoville every month for the Army. 2 1/2 hours. not bad
My understanding from having lived in TX, that long guns don't fall under the concealed/open carry regulations applied to handguns. Back in the day there were plenty of shotguns and rifles hanging on racks in the back of pickups.
Legal or not, I'd bet carrying a rifle on a downtown street is likely to get some attention from some uniformed folk. Like Crotalus said, it may be a threat of disturbing the peace or something similar, but not a firearm violation.
Had a cool Dr. visit today. I brought up doing some straightening/cleaning up in my reloading/computer room and it peaked her interest. She stated she carries, so we had a bit of show and tell there in her office, her HK and my NAA pug (at the time). The more I get to know this Dr., the better I like her...that was until she gave me a shot in the tail end.
