Gentleman!
I think I need a new sport to play. After tearing my meniscus I can't play football or rugby anymore.. :( I need a new sport to play! I think I should pick up golf! I know some of yall are big into golf so I have a few questions. What should I look for in a used golf set?(I'm shopping on a college student's budget) Is there a certain size for clubs depending on hight? (I'm 5'11") What are good brands to look for? (BY THE WAY I'M LEFT HANDED LOL) Thanks for the help guys!
At 5'11" I think standard size should work. I would buy a good used set instead of a brand new cheap set.
If you can get a set where the 3 & 4 are hybrids, you could probably worry about getting a driver later.

I disagree, I think you should get a full set, including driver. You will play with what you learn to play. If you use a hybrid 3 as a driver you won't learn how to hit a driver.
I would agree that you should get a used set of quality clubs: Titleist, Taylor Made, Ping, King and Callaway are all fantastic brands. It will be more difficult to locate a left handed set but they are out there. Stay away from Wilson brand clubs (mine started to fall apart after a few years of normal use). Especially in the beginning the brand of clubs you own is far less important than your swing. Don't over spend on your first set. Same with balls. I like maxfli Noodle golf balls and they are not that expensive.
Remember your swing is the most important part of your golf game, not your score, not your clubs. If you develop a good swing then your score will improve.

Thanks! just for a good reference point.. how much would I be looking to spend on a good used set? Whats cheap and what is too much?
I'd deal with the issue of whether you can play golf and whether you will want to play golf. It is hard to learn and even harder to become proficient at it. Anybody can buy clubs. When I started I took weekly lessons for six weeks before I bought clubs. By then I was hooked, but there are plenty of used sets laying around because people bought clubs that they later discarded because of lack of use.

Another alternative to buying used clubs is to buy a set of clones. Ive been golfing for a while but was never really into spending extreme amounts of money on the clubs (mainly for their names). Instead I spent about $250 on a full set of irons and a driver that are clones of the Taylormade R7's (CGB Max on the driver).
Alright guys I got my first set it consists of Titleist irons, Pinemeadow hybrid, TaylorMade drivers, and some no name putter (i'll get a better one later). I just traded for a straight razor. and I already made the money back from the accesories (bag, gloves, hats, balls) so total money spent.. $0 ;D

Putters, like straight razors, are a very personal decision. Don't rush into a decision to buy it, until you've tried it out.
Take it to a putting green at a local golf course, along with some of your favorite golf balls, and try it out. If you like how it feels, the balance and how it strikes the ball, then get it.

Pinemeadow is the clone company all of my set came from. Real stand up company if you have issues and they will generally do what they can to help with any situation.
