Thread: Playing Cards

I just thought of this recently and couldn't find any threads on playing cards. This can be a discussion on any card games that you find fun in particular.

Personally I like to play an old Italian game called Scopa. I am starting to learn Briscola also. For those games you need a 40 card deck.

For 52 card decks I usually play Gin, Rummy, Stud, or Draw.

I used to play a lot of cribbage as a lad, with my father mainly. A fun game, but unfortunately not too many people know how to play it nowadays.

My best card game ever was me and a good friend, poker, cash on the table and way to much whisky....
Next day we found a note on the floor "IOU 800" but in Swedish.
Since none of us remembered anything after midnight it was hard to figure out who owed who.
We ended up going to the pub with 800 each and bought each other drinks all night, that was one fun evening!

Are you sure it meant 800 in money? It could have meant lashes with the cat-o'-nine tails!!

For some reason, lately I've been wanting to build a cribbage board-- I remember my grandfather having one when I was young that was shaped like a fish. But, I found all of the rules that I've read online convoluted and confusing; I'm sure that if somebody could show me in person that it would be quite simple, but so far I haven't been able to find anyone that really knows how to play.

There are some very ornate cribbage boards out there - my father has his grandfather's, which is inlaid with mother of pearl and has little ivory pegs. I've seen all sorts of shapes out there.

Apart from the fun of playing it (and yes, being shown how is probably the best way rather than reading rules), there's all the fun and quirky little sayings that go along with it. 15 is the magic number when counting off, and lots of little fun rhymes go along with it: "Fifteen 2 and the rest won't do", "Fifteen four and the rest won't score".... or, if you are very unlucky and have nothing that scores, you are said to score "19" (19 is impossible to get as a score in a single hand in crib).

Just nice old school fun with some mental arithmetic thrown in for good measure

In High school we played Eucher a lot, and I mean A LOT!! I would skip class and head to the cafeteria because I knew there was always guys playing. We played for money and sometimes set up little tournaments. Ohhhhhh, those were the days!!!

Recently, My wife has taught me cribbage. I hated it at first, (she kept kicking my butt.) But now I'm really digging it. The board we play on is a cheap board she got from Walmart. During a game one time, I thought, man that piece of crotch walnut in the garage sure would look good as a game board!!! Low and behold, my favorite place in the world sells plans. And they're dirt cheap!!! So now I just need to find some time between all my other hobbies to whip one up!!
