Try this link. It has plans for a DIY grinder. I have built these.

SFPM means Surface Feet Per Minute. It is a different, and better, measure than RPM.

Yes, that is correct. SFPM (Surface Feet Per Minute) is the rate the belt is moving, because of different sized drive wheels and such this is the only way to accurately reference the speed the actual belt is moving. Rpms have to be computed with the wheel diameter to find the SFPM.

I can't remember the exact number but I run mine around 1800 SFPM and even then with a full hollow grind it gets hot quick and has to be cooled constantly to prevent over tempering. Mine is a no-welds grinder as well, I got some good deals when building it, but I have have the ability to use any sized wheels, flat platen and all. I roughly spent about 500 ish for the entire thing, and it's very easy to build.

I'm planning on building this one next week. Shank Knives How to Build a Belt Grinder, How to Make Your Own Custom Homemade 2x72 Belt grinder Plans - ShankKnives I wanted to build the mobi-dick seen in this thread,

plans for building your own belt sander - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum

but without at least some of the basic dimensions I'm going with the shank knives one whose frame I might be able to make from cut-offs.

These plans look good, and they are free. Another source is USA Knifemakers - I think they charge $25, and sell all the parts, as well. Tracy Micklen (sp?), the owner, is a good guy to work with. Good luck on your project.
