Thread: contact wheel size?

I'm about to order a kmg and now i want to to know what size contact wheels I need to get to make razors.

I don't know a great deal about razors but the info I've been given, and tried are that a 5" and 2" wheel are a good combo.
I also have a 10" and 14" wheel and both are far to large. Very little difference in a 6",5" and 4" so middle of the road is my suggestion. If you get a flat platen with your grinder it will probably have a 2" contact wheel so you are better off using that as then you have somewhere to flatten and put tapers on your tang also

I use the 4, 6 and 8 contact wheel the most. For the small wheel attachment I have all sizes available.

+1 on what Maximilian says. Take note : the bigger the wheel, the closer to wedge the grind will be. Double hallows use two sizes close to the same, like 4" and 6". So it all depends on what you want to do. A platen is a must if your going to be thinning scale material shaping long straight lines. Even rounding the top of a tang.

Second thing to think about is belt grit. The cost of your grinder is nothing compared to attachments you can add :<0)

The attachments are usually a long term investment. My biggest ongoing expense are my belts. With the amount I spend I could buy a big flat screen TV every semester

I mostly 2,4,8. My 2 & 4 are on a flat platen & I run the 8 on it's own tool arm. Recently bought some small steel wheels from the guy off ebay from 1/4" up to 1".

Ever since I switched to ceramics, I find the cost manageable. Typically, ever belt lasts about 3 to 4 razors.
My blanks are already forged to razor size and tapered in the tang area. So the amount of metal removal required is not enormous.

Yet to try a cubitron belt.sounds like it might be worthwhile!!

Do you guys use solid or serrated contact wheels?
Is there a difference?

I have both, I prefer the serrated, but not by a lot. To me it is one of the six of one or half dozen of the other things, both work.
