I have wondered for a while now about the term "wet shaving". I'm not as old as some but older than others. when I started scraping my face we just called it shaving and it didn't really matter if you used a DE, Straight , electric or called in the cat. I didn't know they had magazines on the subject but next i'm in the book store i'll get one.

I think it helps to differentiate (sp?) it from the methods (and methodolgy) of using the goop in a can. From my limited experience, a large part of the improvement of my shave (and my skin) is due to the "wet" aspect of wet shaving.

I was wondering about a similar thing: back when there were only straight razors, I guess nobody called them straight razors. Just razors. Now, I have to gesticulate and try a few times to make people understand what sort of razor I use.

Back in the day they were called straight razors and cut throat razors.

Some folks have no idea what a straight razor is. I typically get two different reactions from folks when I say I shave with a straight razor; "A what?" or "Are you nuts?", the facial expressions are priceless.................

Don't forget: some folks shave dry, with electric razors!

Now to me using lather from a can is still wet shaving - the only non wet shaving is electric. That's unless anyone uses a razor on dry skin.
