The Douk-Douk

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has used or has heard of anyone using a "Douk-Douk" knife as a razor. I live in Canada and I saw in the Lee Valley calatogue that this knife has been used in past history as a straight and I thought it'd be quite cool to add one to the collection. The blade is made out of carbon-steel and I thought I read somewhere that this type of steel isn't recommended to be used for a straight.

Thanks for the tip. I've been looking for a quality utility knife to fit my budget and this might be the trick. Everything in this price range is just too cheaply made to last. I wouldn't use it to shave with though. Trying to get an even bevel without the spine to guide you would be a nightmare.

PS If you did use it to shave, could you call it a Double Douk?

Carbon steel is what the straight razors of old were made from. It is actually easier, for the most part, to give carbon steel a great edge, but the down side is that carbon steel rusts easily so you have to make sure to dry and oil the blade to prevent rust (same as for any knife made from carbon steel). If the blade is sharp enough, I think any blade can be used for shaving, with the right technique. A friend of mine said khukris were used for shaving in India, even. Personally I think the Douk-Douk looks more practical for that purpose than a khukri.

Oh man, shaving with a khukri, now that would be a challenge. Those things are quite large. And some of you guys talk about the 8/8s being to large.

According to what I remember, a khukri could not be sheathed unless it had drawn blood? Maybe this is how they accomplished this if there was no one left to kill.

If the occasion arises where I purchase the knife, I may have to return to my scientific roots and call it "Douk^2" (Douk Squared).
