Thread: A story and a question

Ok
I pretty new to this forum (Have been here for something like two weeks by now)
I really love the classic shaving
I love wet shaving, I love using all the things, read about it and so on
Now I have a very old DE from my father, and I just ordered from www.classicshaving.com a new set that include new DE (Vision) and a brush, colognes, soups and so on
A really nice set that cost a lot! (almost every thing that a DE user can dream of nowadays)
But
And here is the question and the problem
Since I have been into wet-shaving, I want to go str8, and it really eating me from the inside
Every day that pass I just think about having a nice straight razor with me, and shaving with it
I don't want to mess with the honing and sharping
So, I thought about getting the nice Feather Razor "Artist Club DX Special"

the problems are that I both a little scared of it (Never used a str8, and every one say that the Feather is really sharp like hell)
and the $ issue of curse

What shell I do?
Can someone please advice me here?

I would say, use your DE for a little while. It is new, and it requires your full attention for at least a little while. While you are enjoying your new DE, save up some and then by the straight.

I have never used a feather, but most have said that the sharpness just takes some getting used to, just as a normal straight does. The feathers are definitely sharper than a normal straight, but either way your skin is going to have to get used to it. Your skin will feel irritated for the first few weeks of use. As for cuts and nicks, I would say that you probably can't do much more damage then with a normal straight. Cuts will come easier, but they wont necessarily be any deeper or more damaging. Of course, this all depends on your technique. If your not using the straight correctly, or if your rushing through it, then your going to cut your self up. I should know.

Well, you have to go with your heart, IMO. That doesn't mean immediately, necessarily, because I agree with Matt that if you've shelled out good money for your new DE set you'd want to use it and enjoy it, right?

But in my humble experience if you're yearning to try a straight, you'll end up there eventually. So I'll second Matt's suggestion to use your new DE and save up toward some straight paraphenalia. I guess you could even throw your hat in the giveaway, but I don't know what the eligibility criteria is - you'd have to check out those threads to check.

Now your in the right place.

I don't know that using a DE in anyway really prepares you for a straight other than the wet shaving routine but I agree that if you just spent the money on that expensive DE you should use it for a while and then rotate into a Straight routine.

Just read all the help files here and as you have questions ask away. Once your ready to start the straight routine you can ask specific questions on various aspects and we'll be glad to answer. Don't forget to sign up for the drawing.

Why not switch razors on your off days? I went from a Mach3 to a straight, and since then have discovered DE's and love them too. Part of it is how much time I have, part is what I'm in the mood for. Sometimes I use both a straight and a DE in the same shave.

If you don't want to mess with honing and sharpening you have two choices. The Dovo (and others) Shavette which uses a standard DE blade broken in half. The other choice is the feather. I've never used a feather, but I'd like to get one. They are supposed to be the sharpest razor in the world. Don't be scared of it, just respect it.

Yeah the problem is that my heart want the STR8, so I don't know what to do
Any way, maybe I will keep on going with the DE, and later will go for the str8

I prefer the Feather, seem very handy and nicely decorated
and I have heard many good things about it
The only problem is that any one say to me that it is a really sharp one
So, I am a little afraid of it
