Moss scuttle - just ordered it :-)

I just want to say tank you for all the people that have been help me out with this
and particular to Sara, who gave me one of the BEST costumer service I have ever had (When it is good, it is goodhttp://badgerandblade.com/vb/images/..._guys/wink.gif ) , She answerd all my e-mails very quick, help me decide, and I just can say one thing, I still don't know how the product is because I don't have it, but I can say

A lot of people have the moss scuttle. I ordered one pretty quick my self. I love mine. Had it almost a week now and have used it everyday. I love it.

I have the small one, and I have a large brush. It works fine for me. The brush fits nicely and heats well, but I can still whips up a lather in it, though I usually still use a mug. You will enjoy it.

Yeah I think you and me are the same
I am more a man of 21-24 mm brushes style (Not large), and I do use my nice MUG for making leather, so I will uese the Scuttle only for keeping it worm and nice

Any way I really anticipate for it, I am sure it will be so nice, the smell and feeling of an hot leather on my face:D

Actually my recommendation is to go with the small one. I use up to a 300mm knot brush in mine. I would not part with it in my daily routine at this point.

Yeah, I have the C&E EJ Super Badger. It is pretty big. They don't specify, but after measuring it, I would say it is a 26-27mm brush. Not quite a 30, but it fits the small scuttle quite nicely, but still leave enough room to re whip a lather if need be, though I usually mix the lather in another mug or bowl.

That's quite a brush. Might I suggest you give this a try? I hear the lather gets pretty hot... :D

Hey Lynn

Question, and not trying to hi-jack - but...

When you use your scuttle, do you just fill it with hot water from the tap - filling up the top bowl too, and then soak your brush in that, dump it out when you are ready to make lather, refill the scuttle and then park your lather filled brush in it?

Just curious how other folks are using theirs...with my large scuttle, I lather outside the scuttle too, but I find that tap only hot water gets cold too fast when lather and all the other stuff...your experience?

You described exactly what I do. I find the lather stays nice and hot for at least 15 minutes, maybe as much as 25. I haven't really timed it...

Maybe my tap water comes out hotter than yours. If I turn the hot water on all the way, it burns my hand.

I specifically upped the temp on the water heater for my morning shaves, and so I get very hot water out of the tap. I fill both chambers up with hot water plus I let it sit in the sink full of hot water (I am still playing with this just to see if it can actually get any better). I let the brush sit in top chamber to soak as well. Once everything is filled, I jump into the shower for a nice fresh start. When I get out, I drain the water from the sink and scuttle, and then refill the lower chamber with hot water again. I let my brush drain a little and then charge my brush with whatever soap or cream I am using. I have found that I can lather most things right in the scuttle. I have a 26mm brush and the smaller size scuttle, and yet I still get good lather. Just me?

Hmmm.

I have two 50 gal water heaters, and the house is relatively new, so I think they cranked the damn things down - I actually wash with full on - no mix- hot water from the tap. It is pretty hot, but not burning, but doesn't even begin to get and keep the scuttle hot. I am sure in some effort to be energy efficient, the heaters were cranked down...I have been using a tea making water heater to give me boiling water, but I don't want to put my brushes in it till it cools, and it heats the bottom of the scuttle till it is burning to the touch...evaporates lather like nobody's business. I use the water on the towel in a bowl too - have to wait for it to cool (though I have been known to almost scald my face looking for the hot moist goodness).

There is a golden moment in the half-light, when the water is just hot enough without scalding, when the wait is just long enough, the lather is working well, the brush is soaked without fear of curling the hair with burning water, and the razor rises - and my soul is at one with the river, which runs over rocks worn smooth, and on those rocks are their names, "Henckel, Dovo, Revisor..." OKOK- enough silliness, you get the point. That point doesn't happen often, it is rather hit and miss...or nick and gasp, as it were...

I will try to crank the water heater up a bit (now we are getting energy inefficient here boys) - and will try from the tap...that would be so much more convenient.

I didn't like the lather bowl, I want to order it, but I think it is just too small, usually when I am using bowls the lather run of the sides, I feel much better when using big mugs

It is a little small, the measurements are given as 5"x 1 3/4", but it should be perfect for certain, special, high quality creams that are a little tricky to whip up it a mug or deep bowl. These amazing creams require just this type of bowl. Yes I am talking about the one and only TGQ creams that Colleen so lovingly makes for us. I think this bowl will accompany them nicely.

I don't know, but maybe I put a lot of effort when I am doing my leather, but when using small bowls instead of mugs, usually a lot of leather just run out of the sides
When using mugs, it can't no where to run, so I get a better full leather

But, maybe with more small brushes and a very nice cream it can work nice:)

I am just going to work the lather in the scuttle. I use a small stainless steel mixing bowl now. It is about the same size as the bowl on top of the moss scuttle. I use a plunging motion more than mixing. Everyone has thier own style. It is one of the many things that makes this whole shaving thing great. Find what works for you and keep doing it.

Thinking about the scuttle

Considering taking the plunge on the scuttle- I read somewhere else a guy uses a sunbeam hotshot to put water in it, since the tap isn't hot enough- sounds like there's a sweet spot between hot and scalding. Seems like the agreement here is just to turn up the hot water heater?

Received today my large Moss Scuttle. Really well made and nice.
I make lather in the top bowl of the scuttle with a Kent BK8 and it works great.

I thought that the smaller would be tiny for a medium-large brush (don't know how is considered BK8).

Really happy with it.
