Thread: Moss scuttle - just ordered it :-)

Actually my recommendation is to go with the small one. I use up to a 300mm knot brush in mine. I would not part with it in my daily routine at this point.

Yeah, I have the C&E EJ Super Badger. It is pretty big. They don't specify, but after measuring it, I would say it is a 26-27mm brush. Not quite a 30, but it fits the small scuttle quite nicely, but still leave enough room to re whip a lather if need be, though I usually mix the lather in another mug or bowl.

That's quite a brush. Might I suggest you give this a try? I hear the lather gets pretty hot...

Question, and not trying to hi-jack - but...

When you use your scuttle, do you just fill it with hot water from the tap - filling up the top bowl too, and then soak your brush in that, dump it out when you are ready to make lather, refill the scuttle and then park your lather filled brush in it?

Just curious how other folks are using theirs...with my large scuttle, I lather outside the scuttle too, but I find that tap only hot water gets cold too fast when lather and all the other stuff...your experience?

You described exactly what I do. I find the lather stays nice and hot for at least 15 minutes, maybe as much as 25. I haven't really timed it...

Maybe my tap water comes out hotter than yours. If I turn the hot water on all the way, it burns my hand.

I specifically upped the temp on the water heater for my morning shaves, and so I get very hot water out of the tap. I fill both chambers up with hot water plus I let it sit in the sink full of hot water (I am still playing with this just to see if it can actually get any better). I let the brush sit in top chamber to soak as well. Once everything is filled, I jump into the shower for a nice fresh start. When I get out, I drain the water from the sink and scuttle, and then refill the lower chamber with hot water again. I let my brush drain a little and then charge my brush with whatever soap or cream I am using. I have found that I can lather most things right in the scuttle. I have a 26mm brush and the smaller size scuttle, and yet I still get good lather. Just me?

That is exactly what I do Kriton. Stays warm the entire shave.

I have two 50 gal water heaters, and the house is relatively new, so I think they cranked the damn things down - I actually wash with full on - no mix- hot water from the tap. It is pretty hot, but not burning, but doesn't even begin to get and keep the scuttle hot. I am sure in some effort to be energy efficient, the heaters were cranked down...I have been using a tea making water heater to give me boiling water, but I don't want to put my brushes in it till it cools, and it heats the bottom of the scuttle till it is burning to the touch...evaporates lather like nobody's business. I use the water on the towel in a bowl too - have to wait for it to cool (though I have been known to almost scald my face looking for the hot moist goodness).

There is a golden moment in the half-light, when the water is just hot enough without scalding, when the wait is just long enough, the lather is working well, the brush is soaked without fear of curling the hair with burning water, and the razor rises - and my soul is at one with the river, which runs over rocks worn smooth, and on those rocks are their names, "Henckel, Dovo, Revisor..." OKOK- enough silliness, you get the point. That point doesn't happen often, it is rather hit and miss...or nick and gasp, as it were...

I will try to crank the water heater up a bit (now we are getting energy inefficient here boys) - and will try from the tap...that would be so much more convenient.
