What is your routine?
1) lather first
2) strop
3) then shave
or do you prefer to
1) stop first

3) then shave
For my money I lather first, strop, then shave. This way I get a little more beard softening time before I shave.
P.S. of course there might be a few who shave, lather, strop - but they need a good talking to. :whipped:

My usual routine is lather - strop - relather - shave.
I strop - lather - shave.
For me it seems the right way to do.
And ok, if I have to move a lot with lather on my face, when I have to start shaving, lather is everywhere but on my face :p

In cali we have really hard water so I have enough trouble keeping a nice creamy lather so waiting for stropping is out of the question

On shave day, I shower then apply pre-shave cream, then usually face lather from hard soaps and shave. Post shave use alum block, then lotion or balm. I almost never strop in the bathroom immediately before shaving. Usually, my stropping is a separate Zen activity from the actual shave. Usually I'll strop multiple razors on several strops in another room the day or days before shave day. This way I devote my full attention to stropping which keeps most my rotation razors ready to use at any time. My finishing stone touchups and stropping are a combined separate activity. It's like having two hobbies with twice the fun.

I strop, shower, lather, shave and strop again before storing the razor. It's so dry here in the Canadian Prairies that it doesn't take long for your lather to dry out regardless of how fast you shave or strop.

+1 with BobH. Gives me a chance to not feel rushed in the morning. I inspect the next several coming up in the rotation and decide if they go to the refresh pile or not. Sometimes, if I'm not sure of the next morning razor I will strop one or two ahead in case I need to jump ahead.Quote:

Normally I lather, strop, then shave.
But, if I use William's shave soap, then the lather on 1/2 my face can get dry during shaving, so I end up doing lather, strop, re-lather, shave.

In the shower I use soap first on my face and then when washing my hair I use excess shampoo lather on the beard. That leaves the face as clean as I can get it.
Also I have found that if I put excess shaving lather on top of the shave soap and leave it there until the next morning, it helps to keep the soap puck hydrated. I get much better, or at least easier lather that way.
Generally, I will lather, strop, re-lather, shave, and then strop again.
Shower, rub in a bit of pre-shave, lather over that, strop, rinse & re-lather, shave and then strop again. I use an old mug for lathering my soap and a scuttle separately so I always like to lather first out of the mug and then while I am stroping, the brush is getting a good warming in the scuttle. Shaving bliss....
