Default Giving It Back For Some Else

I've posted many times about how when I was first starting out and a Total Newbie that Eric/HNSB took time out of his very busy life to help me. :He gave me minor discounts on a few beginners razors (I was trying to recover from a very painful divorce after 25 years of marriage) he also gave me some wonderful council when I decided to 'try to learn' how to hone. (I'd waited almost a year and a half and I'm damn glad I did)!

Thanks to the example that he'd shown me I continue to 'Pass it Along' OR 'Pay it Back'.

I've posted how a young woman approached me at work and asked me if I could help her get her husband into straight razor shaving and I said "Sure"!

She then asked what it would cost.

I knew that she and her family of three struggle so I gave her an 'Estimate' of what I would consider a 'decent' beginners start up.

    A vintage straight
    A decent strop
And a Very Basic Brush, Cup and Soap kit.

    I told her $100

She asked if she could make payments. I told her 'Of course".

I found a nice razor in the classifieds priced at $55 + Shipping. I PM'd the seller, told him the situation and asked if he would consider $50 With Shipping/he obliged. If it wasn't for that very generous act of kindness I don't think that this venture would have happened.

So the razor arrived and then the strop and shaving kit so I took the razor to work and when it was possible I showed it to the woman. When she saw it she exclaimed:"That's a Straight Razor??" "I thought that they had something at the bottom that you turned and the top opened up"!!

I told her that what she was envisioning was what was called a DE. She then said; "I don't care he's getting it cuz it's pretty"!

I've got it all ready, the razor polished up and honed the scales likewise I've been hand rubbing the hell out of the Illinois 127 and I decided to 'Put a little Frosting on the Cake'. I've also pitched in a DE and a pack of Derby Blades and a partial can of Ballistol. We don't live in a 'Rust Prone' area but I always try to practice those 6 P's and keep my straights oiled!

I plan on telling her that if he comes to find that he doesn't appreciate this age old art of using a straight that I'll buy it and the strop back for what she paid for them. If either is damaged I may have to rethink my offer and I'll let her know that also.

Well here's her gift for his Fathers Day

OH!!! I Brought It All In For: $97.58 And I of course didn't charge her for cleaning up the razor or honing it. And it's a Great Shaver!! I wish it was mine!

OH GOD John, I may laugh myself to death with that!

HOWEVER And Really Seriously; I do have a soft spot ('being a Softie') when it comes to helping those that are 'At Least Trying' to better themselves! The woman is a hard worker and after 6 years is finally getting some better wages and credibility.

I've told her that either I could go to their home or he could come to my apartment and give him hands on time to make the journey more enjoyable.

Passing it on is something that I've enjoyed and I hope that financially I'll be able to continue doing so.
