first hardwater exp

I was in Orange County (CA) recently, taking me better half to Disneyland, when I noticed something. When I took a shower I noticed that the shampoo I had, didn't lather all that well. Then, when I tried to shave, I noticed that the blade of my feather in a DE seemed to (for lack of a better term) stick to my face.

All of the water in Hawaii comes from a underground aquifer, so it's relatively soft, so this is the first time I had to shave with harder water.

I now have a new found respect for you all, how do you all manage?


(That was probably a stupid questioin, but I still am curious)

It does suck Brendon ---- at least when it comes to shaving ---- I don't like how soft water leaves you feeling soapy when you take a bath.

As far as lathering soap for shaving ---well if you spend enough time you can get the ratio's right --- usually more soap and more whipping action is needed --but it can be done for sure.

This is true, I did have an easier time getting the soap off in the mainland

I've never really had experience with hard water, except in the UK and I was using cream in a can back then. Does salt do anything for hard water (I seem to recall needing to add salt to our dishwasher)? Probably a bad idea to add salt to your lather, I guess...

I think it is potassium and calcium that causes hard water (mineralization) --- so adding salt? Maybe -

I just googled hard water and salt - it reads like brine is used to regenerate water softeners, but I'm not sure.... But directly adding salt, even if it does soften water, is probably a no-no for your straight I guess.

I imagine if you add salt directly it will cut down on your lather for one thing (at least immediately) - but yeah --salt might accelerate the rusting of your razors, and dry out your face ---- really, hard water is not that bad if you know your soaps well ---- and you can live without the extra fluffy gourmet lather. But this might just be a little too much for you soft water boys and your tender bottoms ---- bunch of girlie boys.

Hey man, fluffy sweet almond scented lather is what I live for! That, and size 11 hot pink patent leather 7-inch stilettos. If that makes me a girlie boy then hand me a Louis Vuitton clutch purse and call me Amanda Huggenkiss! :rant:

I don't know what to be more afraid of , the 7-inch stiletto or size 11 shoe. I lived in Santa Barbara CA. for 25 years, I don't think I have ever lived anywhere that had harder water than there.

I just moved to the bay area from Orange County (Down the street from Dizzy Land) and the water there is alot better than S.B., The water here is about the same as O.C. as well. I just don't notice anymore.

Alaska was probably the best place as far as... well... Everything (I'm trying to get back there ASAP!!)

I didn't shave at all in Georgia or Kansas if I remember correctly...

I live in hardwater in central in new mexico but I have a water softener. Adding salt will do nothing. Water softeners use resin beads loaded with salt or potasium chloride and they exchange the hard stuff ion for ion then recharge after a while. Hard water not only makes lathering difficult but cloggs up plumbing and appliances.

In the UK I live in a town that gets its water from chalk hills. It is awful water to use for anything. Even drinking it isn't pleasant. I used to love visiting my grandmas house in the midlands which had much better water, and was the only place I would drink water from the tap when I was a child. Now we use a water softener, which makes shaving and showering a much nicer experience all round.
