How often do you replace the silica-gel packets?
I personnally dont use them but have thought about it when i get this cabinet finished. Hope someone answers your question as its a good point.
Also, where do people find these for sale?
I am in the automotive repair business, so lots of parts come sealed with them inside.
I always toss them in a baggie and reuse them. I suppose they are still of some use that way as long as they are not left out in a damp atmosphere. I have them in drawers and boxes which stay closed unless retrieving something. Also, everything stays in a climate-controlled environment.
Once in a blue moon, I accumulate a pile and just change them out.
Rarely, in other words...
Might just make me feel better, yet nothing has rusted! :D
I have saved a few and told the wife to keep them when she finds them in boxes. I uear they will turn blue when used up, but i dont know if all of them are this way. Guess ill just keep collecting.
BTW, i got the legs for my cabinet stained with walnut color, 3 coats of satin clear coat and put on the cabinet. Little steps at a time.
Shes got legs...

One drawer done! :y
I was going to wait until I got them all done to show it but I couldn't wait. Thanks to Sharptonn for the great idea and the pics. Also thanks to Outback for his pics and ideas on the way he made his boxes to hold razors. His box is beautiful but I wanted to be able to see the razors more.
I made my own rails out of 1/4 X 1 1/4 inch poplar wood. One on each side shaped just like the wrench racks Tom had posted. I cut mine to 60 degrees. I made one to sit a little lower than the other so that the wedge end of the razors sits down more and holds the blades closer to level. The rails are glued and nailed to a 5/8 inch thick filler board in the bottom of the drawer so that nothing is attached to the drawer and the razors sit closer to the top of the drawer. Plus that's means no damage to the old cabinet! Red Satin attached to a wood frame sits over the rails and made big enough to fit completely down in all the slots.
It was a bit more work than the first idea I had but I think the outcome is much better. Each drawer will hold 12 razors and for the drawer that gets filled with #14's (I hope some day) I can make the rails shorter so the drawer will still close. Guess what I will be doing tomorrow. I plan on doing this to 9 drawers at this time as that will hold every razor I have at this time plus some, but when I get more razors I can put together more drawers. I will cut up all the rails, satin and frame wood for the Satin and just put it all in a drawer so when the times comes to fill more drawers, it wont take much to put them together.
So the end product with all but the 3 bottom drawers for parts will hold 180 razors. I hope I don't go over that amount before I start selling. But now that I have room, whats the hurry!
Thanks for checking out my cabinet and for all the help, comments, ideas and recommendations.

Jerry, the cabinet is friggin' awesome man. Sorry I got to this thread about a week late, really cool to read through it and see it come along. Great job my friend, I bet it fills up quicker than you think! Thanks for sharing it... but now I have a Japanese apothecary cabinet sized hole in my life
Awesome job Jerry!
Should be enough room for a little while.
Pete <:-}
Its still your fault Roy. You got me started, I just got carried away.
Garrison, you can find them around, they just want a lot more money for them then they are worth in my opinion. But this one was just the size I was looking for. There was another cabinet that had a top like mine but a bottom also with bigger drawers. Wood face but metal cabinet and drawers. Also it was full of glass trays. Made for dentists. They wanted 800 for it. I got this one for less than half of that.
Thanks Pete. I hope I dont fill it too quickly as the wife would have a cow!
OH MY!! Worse than I thought! Both Denial and Blame Shifting. I'll contact my friend.

I bet your wife is impressed whether she admits it or not.
My wife always says I am nuts, yet takes her friends in my room to see my razors all the time! :)
Amazing job on the cabinet Jerry :tu
Now your razors are sitting pretty like royalty
No doubt about that, Jerry. You get things done with impressive speed! :D

I see you have saved your little packet of Japanese compound. Wonder what that is?
Might help to date the cabinet?
I tried to look up the company name and found nothing. On the back of the package it has some English. Says its basicly for upset stumick. Its has 8 or 10 pills in it. Still sealed up. I was hoping to find so info in the company name but all i could f8nd was a company in Japan that sells all kinds of stuff. Not meds or natural remidies.
Fantastic job! That cabinet is perfect and your work looks great. Enjoy it.
Just curious Jerry...
Where in your home is the cabinet going to be located?
Such a great piece of antique furniture...so many options.
Pete <:-}
Pete, i have my man cave/radio room. A standard sized bedroom converted into a radio room and shave den. Two walls are nothing but table and shelves for my radio equipment, one wall has the entry door and closet, last wall has my shave gear. That is where it sits. No water even close as the bathrooms are up stairs from there. Now its a bit of a pita to pick a razor, strop it then go up stairs to shower and shave but its MY ROOM! The wife dont even vacuum or dust in there. That has caused issues in the past and she now wont do it any more.
So its hiding in my room and only people that come over to talk on, play with or want me to fix radios will see my razors and shave equipment. Hell, they thi k im crazy enough when they see my antennas and radio room. Ha.
Knock on the door. Mrs. Gasman answers and the gentleman asks; "Is Jerry here"? She says; "He's in HIS room".
