Thread: Good example of a shave with a Feather Shavette

Ouch! Some of those angles towards the end would play havoc with my skin! I know he's not using any pressure but that's still pretty much scraping rather than shaving, and with a fresh Feather Super Pro blade, quite unnecessary in my book but then it does work for this gent so there you go. I'd just hate to have someone trying a Feather for the first time attempt to duplicate the angles this fellow is using without sneaking up on them first.

For the record, the razor is the Feather AC RG and if he's getting 10+ shaves out of a single blade, they would have to be the Super Professional ones.

That was a really cool video. I have to stretch my skin much more than he did to avoid irritation. Does he not have to stretch his skin as much because he's using such an ultra sharp blade? I've never used a feather of any kind. Facial contortions alone don't get me where I need to be.

I've always done my XTG cheek passes from mouth to ear, the reverse of what he does. More dangerous the way I do it? Probably; if I slipped I could cut my ear, but I stop about 1/2" before I get there. It gets me closer than when I go ear towards mouth with my whiskers.

Chris, I can slack skin shave with a Feather AC, no need to stretch at all for me unless there's a skin crease the blade can get caught in. For some peculiar reason, I seem to be developing more and more creases in my face......<sigh>. For me, stretching the skin other than just tilting my head one way or the other would cause skin thinning, ingrown hairs, weepers and all sorts of grief. The Feather blades just glide across your skin... it's like wiping away your stubble with a..... uhmmm..... feather?!?!?!

Thats great stuff there^^^.

I usually stretch the skin with the feather, and I'm not developing extra creases....... Rather my skin has become quite loose/thin.

Do you mean, that by stretching the skin, you get a looser skin as in wrinkles? Because maybe it also has something to do with age (don't know how old you are and no pun intended), but i know my grandfathers had a looser and thinner skin, when the were getting older.

No I mean in the past 6mths or so since using a straight, it has loosened considerably.

Chris, the Feather Pro blades are so sharp that they actually remove layers off your skin without you noticing. Eventually, if you shave with them every day (well, for some of us anyway) you skin becomes glossy, smooth and becomes prone to nicks and cuts that would not have happened earlier. I particularly remember one of the last times I used a Pro blade that an otherwise oily aftershave product that would sit on my skin making it tacky suddenly absorbed virtually instantly.... I could almost hear a sucking sound as it went right into my skin.... Unlike the many times before there was no trace of it after application... that's when I decided to save the rest of my Pro blades... my skin felt quite literally like white onion skin... papery thin and very smooth, however it was the inability to shave without nicks that was the most annoying part. Switching to the Pro Super blades brought everything under control, those blades are fantastic once you learn to use them. You can shave right over a nick from the day before and not disturb it while still getting a nice close shave. The secret of those Pro Super blades are much like the diagram shown in this page from Shick in Japan, just scroll down to the bottom where they show drawings of the way they build the edge on their brand of straight razor blades. That clamshell edge lets you lift the very edge ever so slightly when needed by simply bringing the spine a touch closer to your face and it skims over the skin surface, floating on a micro thin layer of lather but still lopping the stubble off with no tugging.

While I'm very happy with the fact that I've made the switch to traditional straights, I'll never dispute that the Feather AC isn't suitable for daily shaving... as long as you pick the blade that is right for you. I think the part I didn't like the most was the lack of variety... Same razor, same effortless shave, same treading on eggshells as it's so damn sharp....... it gets boring after a while.

Perhaps he was using the pro guard blades. Definitely that angle on his neck ATG would have left my skin burning raw.
But then I have heard the super pro ones are meant to be more forgiving, so who knows. I was using pro blades, they certainly never make it past 5 shaves, well they do but its no longer comfortable.
