Leavitt & Peirce Tobacco, Cambridge MA

Hey everyone,

I was thinking about going here to check out their cigars for my brothers graduation and read that they offer shaving soaps, brushes, etc. and even a few straights. I know that they have been in Harvard square for about 120 years. Does anyone know what they carry as far as straights? I will be going there soon but would like to know what they carry. If no one knows I'll post a review after I check it out.

I was just in there a couple of weeks ago. As far as straights, I can't remember offhand what kind of razors they have (maybe Dovo?) - they had about 3 of them. One Dovo strap. A few brushes. I was surprised to see almost the full line of Trumper's colognes as well as Institute Karite SS (highly recommended), Mitchell's Wool Fat (also highly recommended), and GFT Limes SS. It's a nice little collection they have there. A little random, but nice. When you walk in, the shave geek section is towards the back and to the left. Enjoy!!

I take it you'll be visiting Colonial Drug too while you're in Harvard Square? Not much in terms of straight razors, but they have LOTS of shave soaps and creams and a ridiculous amounts of colognes and perfumes if you're into that sort of thing. . . beautiful Plisson brushes too. . .

Damn, damn, damn.
I went to college there and never ever set foot in Leavitt & Pierce because I thought they just sold tobacco products. I don't recall a Colonial drug there in the 80's but I definitely remember Leavitt & Pierce and what I smoked back then was not tobacco.

The shaving section at L&P is not very large.

Colonial Drug has been around since well before the 1980's. It's tucked away in Brattle Square, near what I think is now an American Apparel (it was the last time I was there). I definitely agree with the recommendation to stop in there.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've never even heard of Colonial Drug before which is strange because I spent a whole summer working in the square and thought I knew every little store around. I'll definitely check it out when I go to L & P, never hurts to stock up on some soaps and AS. Thanks again.

Colonial Drug is definitely worth a visit. Was there last November and spent quite a bit of time and some money there. The woman opened up all of the cases so that I could "play" with the brushes - quite accommodating - especially after I told her that I was a member of an online shaving forum...

They carry Tabac, amongst others, so I had to pick up a puck or 2.

As mentioned, take your time and your wallet.

Leavitt & Pierce makes me wish I were a smoker! That's a cool store. I didn't know they had any shaving supplies, but that's fitting as well,as that is definitely a Man's store.

+1 (and more) for Colonial drug (over near Crate & Barrel). Fantastic array of shave soaps, creams, aftershaves, etc. Almost all of the brushes they sell are > $150, very, very nice.

Yeah, you don't realize what you "need" until you go into Colonial Drug and see all those beautiful brushes, the full line of TOBS creams, Castle Forbes, Musco, Tabac, Valobra, all the colognes you can imagine, bath soaps. . . . sigh. . . I live near Harvard Square - needless to say I try and stay away from Colonial
