My first experience at T&H and AOS

Being in Vegas, I decided to stop at both T&H and AOS.

First AOS...wasn't impressed. I certainly don't mean any disrespect to any of our female members, but I sort of think that the sales people at a shaving store should be male so that when a guy has a question re: a razor, the sales person can answer the question with certainty and experience. I guess a good analogy would be me working at Victoria's Secret and having a female asking me what the advantage of bra A is versus bra B. I'm sure you understand my point.

I then went to T&H. Having never purchased any T&H product before, I appreciated the sales person's comments when I inquired about several different colognes. However, I thought the area in the back where they give shaves, etc. seemed incredibly small and sort of odd that a customer would have to walk between 2 curtains tied back to get to the chair. Even though I certainly needed a shave, I just could not bring myself to the point of spending the cash on one given I anticipated purchasing a bottle of cologne -- and that was expensive enough. I ended up buying 1805. Hopefully I'll like it and that it will work with my body chemistry. Some colognes smell great on the card they spray it on in the store, but after trying it once, if I don't like it, I may be selling it.

So anyway that was my experience at T&H and AOS. Curious if others have had a similar or completely opposite experience at either place.

In my experience, the AOS sales people - in general- are going to give you the company line on any question you ask. The company line is designed to separate you from your money. Truth and shaving experience have nothing to do with it.

That said, both companies make some very good cream and soap.

I don't doubt the quality of the products and agree with you in theory that experience doesn't necessarily equal knowledge especially if the person is not using the product correctly. Just because a guy has experienced using a str8 doesn't necessarily mean he knows how to correctly use it. However, if you do not have experience with using the product, then at the very least, the sales staff should know the differences and/or the pros and cons to the products they are selling.

Re: Truth...contrary to your belief and at least in my opinion, truth has a lot to do with sales. I appreciated the fact that the sales person at AOS did not make something up when I asked her what the differences were between 2 razors I was inquirying about. That's where either product knowledge or experience come into play.

I can appreciate what you're saying. I wasn't even talking about straights. In my experience at the NY Madison Ave. store, the guys don't shave with straights or even DEs. Even a very newbie traditional wet shaver who's done a little research has a lot more knowledge than the AOS sales staff. I've also heard them tell outright lies. They told me the pure badger brush would only last a year or two and that silvertip - both grossly overpriced- would last for ten years. I've seen them say similar things to other customers as well. Again, that's just my experience. I'm sure the integrity and knowledge varies by store and salesperson.
