    Default Preserving Old Boxes

Greetings ladies and gents, great forum here. I'm wondering what steps can be taken to preserve old razor and hone boxes. I assume "don't use them" is step #1, but are there any special storage issues to prevent deterioration?

As far as razor boxes go many of the old ones had kind of an oilcloth coating on them and that seemed to help them last many, many years. of course many others were plastic, either hard or soft or wood. So it depends what the material is. Nothing lasts forever I'm sad to say even us. Plain cardboard will have the least longevity. maybe you can coat it with shellac or plastic spray. The new Dovo boxes are metal and over time they will probably rust. Ti uses leather slips which will eventually dry out.

    Depressing isn't it?

Yes, it is depressing....think I'll go slash myself
I guess it's silly to worry about preserving cardboard boxes when I'm willing to hone a 100 year old razor--on a 100 year old hone no less! Still, I have to think that old razors should outlast me as long as I don't abuse them. I'll just keep them in a cool and dry location away from bugs. When in doubt, apply common sense.

    Thanks

Welcome to SRP. If your avatar reflects you're being a gun and pipe aficionado we have something in common besides liking to hone hundred year old razors on hundred year old hones.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I appreciate the words of welcome. As for my avatar, it symbolizes my love of all things traditional and thus, alas, politically incorrect in this age. It comes from the bizarre cartoon strip "Red Meat." I do enjoy and advocate ownership of firearms, but I don't smoke; well...maybe a nice Virgina in a clay once in a blue moon. Cheers.

I love your avatar, but he needs a nice straight razor shave.

I used to enjoy firearms, but alas our government make it more and more difficult to own them. So I surrendered my license and sold my lovely firearms
I also smoke (once or twice a week) a nice 9inch tavern clay pipe. I also have a really nicely made 11 inch church warden and a couple of rather old fashion shorter clays.
And I love my history to.
    Welcome to the SRP

Ooops, I forgot , I use superglue to coat fraying cardboard boxes.
