I'd say save the blade if you can, cause Temperites are really great shavers.

Once again I have posted an ambiguously worded poll!
I assumed it was fairly evident the scales are a total loss, but what I did not realize at first glance
was that the blade might be worth saving. But I thought, well, it can't hurt to try, so I ended up
pulling the blade back out of the can and worked on it at 400 (or was it 600? I think both, actually)
    for a couple of hours

You are not trying to sharpen anything here, you just need to see what the bevel steel looks like....
Hey that is good advice! I should have done that before I started sanding away. I think I got lucky on this one

    Augh! I have no dremel!

... I cannot say whether these scales ever had the rot or if they didn't but if you're sure yours do it would be an interesting experiment to see if you could salvage them.
Well, the scales just look shrunken, wrinkles and all. From tip to toe they are only 4.75" long. It's
a short razor anyway, and also there are some strange sickly looking discolored areas on the
scales, and they have an odd odor as well. Anyway, I just snapped them off the blade and tossed
them, maybe next time I will experiment

Yes, I am going to try to get a shaving edge on the blade. It should not be a problem

Blade is fine, heh how could you tell? I thought they were shot at first look!

thats what I've heard as well!

When I pulled the razor out of the can, I took a look and saw the razor is a Case wedge. I figured I
might have enough steel to sand away on it if I wanted to, and since I don't yet own a Case (well,
I do now I guess) then I thought ok I will give it a shot. So I broke the end of the scales off and took
some 600 grit paper to the lower part of the blade and
the stuff came right off like there was never any moisture encouraging rust. weird, eh?

So here is what it looked like after 600 grit paper:

I will continue to update this as the work progresses. I guess we might have to move to the workshop
forum? This will probably be my first (and last) restore there

I have a Temperite with shrunken scales as well. There's no rot, but the blade touches the wedge if I try to close it. Still, it's one of my best shavers.

Honestly, I think you ought to send that blade to me for safe disposal.

Despite your first impressions, I think you found a gem. It'll just take a bit of polishing before it shines for you.

Well, it has been a year. John the Gracious (shutterbug) will be fitting this razor into these new clothes before I know it:

Noted. But I closed the poll when I revealed a picture of the saved blade

Nice! Although I am a bit disappointed you did not take me up on my offer to rescale it for you with my patented sharpie technique.
