All I have to work with is a Norton 4k/8k, what I belive (after posting pics in X hones thread) to be an Arkansas of some description, and most recently a 3 line Swaty (which does me no good until I can get it sharp.)
Also a wool/cotton strop with .5 dia spray and chromium oxide...also no good until the end.
I know I need a 1k to make bevel setting easier. I've used the 4k on 2 other razors, it just takes a while. I actually have a bevel on this but I can't get it to sharpen up.
After 2 days of trying off and on, the only thing I want this razor sharp enough to cut is my wrists. :chop:
I tried an agressive pyramid, I tried a conservative pyramid. I tried the x pattern, I tried the rolling x pattern (it has a smile), I tried a "half moon" pattern from a thread I found.
At one point I threw reason to the winds and tried to sharpen it via sheer force of will and hundreds of laps on my pasted strops...that went as well as any sane person would expect.
After all of this it will now scrape intermittent hairs off of my hand if I hold it just shy of 90 degrees and push hard enough to give my calluses razor burn.
I sharpened up a Henckels quite well and got another razor with no makers marks so sharp it will shave me BBS if I open it in the same room as my stubble.
I don't know what the deal is.
I didn't know Torreys were exceptionally hard. Maybe tomorrow I'll just focus on the 4k side for longer and see if that does the trick. 3rd time should be the charm anyway.
If not, at least the point on the toe is sharp. It's down the lane, not across the street, right?
