Thread: travling with a straight

Have you guys seen or made a good travel system that will hold all your gear? Is there a mini paddle strop or do you take a soft? I would love to see some photos of how you guys do it.

before I retired when I traveled quite a bit I would usually take two stainless razors with me, I kept them in TI leather cases and used a paddle strop on the road. I had sealed containers for cream which I used viz hard soap and I had a smaller badger brush for traveling. I kept it all in the suitcase no special organization or anything. I'd take an aftershave balm that came in a smaller plastic bottle like the trumpers coral.

I'd highly recommend gett'n yourself one of Tony Millers two-sided paddle strops for travelling. For lathering up, I use a Vulfix super badger travel brush and classicshaving soap form fitted into a small tupperware bowl. A small hanging Dovo strop would do, if you're pack'n it insuitcase. I didn't have good luck carrying one in my backpack. A regular brush would do to; you can store it in a toilet paper roll, or roll it in some bubble wrap. Not pretty look'n, but I've heard these methods work fine for most size brushes.

I'm on a little excursion right now and haven't done what I thought I would.

1. I thought a stainless steel razor was a good idea for trave and might lean that way some day, but the only one I have doesn't seem to stay sharp enough for the touch-up and since I wasn't sure about how it'd react to restropping during the shave I opted for my two daily shavers.
2. I also thought that getting them keen before wouldn't necessitate carrying anything more aggressive to sharpen them than the regular strop, but I did put a fresh coat of Chromium Oxide on the Tony Miller flatbed just in case. I haven't used it yet.

So far so good. I just wish I had more time and space for the hot towel treatment.

Xman you mean a stainless BLADE? The stainless blades I have hold a better edge than any of my carbons. They're the only ones I don't have to strop mid-shave. Granted the only two stainless blades I have are a couple of late model Case str8s and a Dovo (inox pearlex), but I really like the steels. Takes a bit more to get them there, but they seem to stay awhile.
As for travelling with a str8, I've been looking for a nice shave kit that is str8-friendly. The Dovo bag on Ray's site and the Trumper wetpack are the two finalists. I have concerns with each of them though. The Dovo utilizes elastic straps to hold str8s.....elastic stretches and dry rots over time and they don't look to be easily replaced. The Trumper is a bit on the small side, capacity-wise, and I'm not sure you can cinch that leather strap that runs through the middle to hold a few str8's snugly. With an investment in something like one of these, I plan to pass it down to one of my boys someday, so I've been asking around a LOT. I might be forced to order both of them, then return the one I like the least. My worry is I'll end up keeping both HAHA then I've got some 'splainin to do :-)

i got a big dopp hanging bag like the one from ll bean. i carry a DE and a feather straight on the road. usually im gone like friday afternoon to sunday night if i go, so we are talking a saturday and sunday shave and sometimes i skip sunday til i get home that night. i had a small simpsons travel brush but sold it. ill take my regular kent bk8 and pack it and let it sit loose on top of everything or wrap it in toilet paper. if i travel by car, its on the back seat, and if i travel by plane, its a carry on.

*****>> I travel with my brush in an empty amber plastic medicine bottle, with vented air holes in the top (I used a nail heated with a match to burn even holes in the top) that allow the brush to dry. It works perfectly!
