Help, I need an excuse not to fit in!
I just started a new job in London with a small company. Ive been getting on well with everyone and yesterday the director asked me if Id be growing a beard for November.
For those in parts of the world where this is not a custom, 'Movember' is basically where sometimes people sport a moustache/ beard throughout november until 1 months growth, often for charity within companies.
Naturally I said I liked being clean shaven. I didnt go as far as to tell him that being a straight shaver I hate beards and razors and shaving are pretty much a big hobby of mine!
The director told me its a company custom and they all do it, although I dont have to do it.
I told him mayb and we left it at that.
Question is, what do I do!?
I hate beards and even 4 days growth feel itchy and horrible! Maybe Ill have to use up all my annual holiday entitlement and just escape for a month!
Any suggestions?

Thanked: 1212Tell him about your hobby, and grow a "soul patch" to humor him.
That's not too bad isn't it? And technically, it is a beard.
Bart.

Bart, good idea, but I wouldnt be able to pull it off...Movember means moustache, I said beard because people sometimes grow extended moustaches with handlebars etc so it looks like a beard...

This person is allergic to their own hair, if not washed within a couple days.
Allergies and eczema
If you don't shave within a couple days, your face breaks out.

My dear Scipio,
I suggest to play the corporate game and grow a mustache. It is for a short time and no big deal. You will be amazed at what the corporate heathens consider "uncooperative" and "not a team player." They have little evil notebooks in their brains, and as they smile at you, they note your name for eternity.
I know what I am talking about, believe me.
These corporate robots really are not "asking" you to wear the facial hair for this short period. They are "telling" you in their own sinister way to do so or else. By playing their games you are not selling out. I don't look at it that way, and I have been around the block a few times. You are just sticking it to them by safely navigating the workplace minefield.
Justify your action to yourself by noting that it is for a charitable cause. Time shall pass, until the next time when they ask you to commit another stupid act. As long as you are in the corporate world, you must play the game. An independent mind frightens the corporate robots. They equate it with rebellion — and rebellions frighten them more than anything.
I hope you are not offended by my thoughts and suggestions: they are from a friend. These mercenaries wear expensive suites and fancy shoes, but many of them are like a razor with a dull edge — which makes for a less than desirable shave.
Thanks for listening.
Regards,
Obie
