    Default Total Newbie Question

I'm pretty sure this topic's been beaten to death, but since I'm new, please indulge me . What's everyone's favorite razor, and why? I know I like the 5/8" the best (I have a basically new Filarmonica 8/8), and so far, my two favorites are a Timor Blue Steel 5/8, and an old Boker Red Injun 5/8. I gotta give the shaving advantage to the Boker, though. It's older and more 'broken in' I probably haven't gotten them as sharp as they could be, though, although they will pass the 'hanging hair' test before I shave.

    Default My faves

I'd have to say my favorites out of the ones I've managed to accumulate would be DeRoma, Arleeda, and Dovo.

I pinch pennies though and buy from flea markets or ebay for next to nothing so I haven't tried any of the fancy new jiggers out and about.

I'm really excited about one I just got off Fleabay. I haven't received it yet, but the pictures were really good. (I actually have 3 off ebay coming; a Clauss, a J.H. Tenk and a Robeson). The Robeson's the one I'm really excited about though. Kind of ivory bakelite handles, with scrolled metal ends on the scales, hammer forging marks on the shank, and a beautiful patina. If it shaves as good as it looks, I'm all set. I also have a Dovo 5/8 Ebony/Silver Steel coming from Classicshaving.com, where I bought my Timor. The guy I talked to said it was a great razor, and he highly recommended it. I'm officially obsessed, but it's a nice change of pace from my normal obsession, which is knife making and collecting.

My two favorite are a Fox razor I picked up from Lynn and some other thing, with like bamboo scales for $10 of Ebay. They have really nice steel. I've spent hundreds of dollars on individual razors and they all suck in comparision. Most sit in a closet. Disgusting.

I really like the 5/8 Puma's, both carbon and stainless. I have a decent collection of razors and I'd say the Puma's I have surpass most and are equal to the rest. There is at least two Pumas in my rotation at all times.

I have many different razors of different sizes, brands, metals and styles. I would have to say that the 6/8s is my favorite size closely followed by 5/8s. There are so many different razors that give me just great shaves I don't think I could ever really single out one particular but if someone put a gun to my head I would say overall the DDs are all outstanding razors in every sense closely followed by the TIs

If you would like to get rid of that Filly 8/8 let me know. I have been interested in the larger blades. I have a Dovo 5/8 (actually Lynn has it at the moment). Maybe we could talk "trade".

I would, except that it has great sentimental value. My dad gave it to me as a Christmas gift about 15 years ago. He has since died. I had asked for it one Christmas, thinking I'd like to start shaving with a SR way back then, but I never did, so it sat in its box waiting for the right time, which is in the last month . I don't use it, much preferring a 5/8 over an 8/8, but I don't think I could ever get rid of it, either. It's one of the few things I have that he gave me. He was not an "accumulator" as I am. He was far more practical.

I don't blame ya Joe. I wouldn't get rid of something like that either. Something like that, that I wasn't going to use, would be framed and hanging on the wall.
