Thanked: 481Safety in the Shave Room
Just this moment, I had a rather scary close call.
I was in the middle of my shave, and my Rogers started to tug instead of cut. I turned, razor in hand, wiping towel in the other, toward my cabinet to swap out a fresh razor.
All of a sudden, I found myself falling. Could not catch my balance, and the thoughts racing through my head... GET THE BLADE AWAY FROM THE BODY! WHY AM I FALLING?! WHAT AM I GOING TO LAND ON?!?
End result is a good sized bruise on my hip and shoulder from landing hard on the floor and towel rack, rogers unharmed thankfully, and my day completely starting off on the wrong track.
As for why I fell? The floor towel. It had somehow gotten "lumped up" and when I turned my foot caught under it and I tripped myself.
I think sometimes we forget to worry about safety. Especially as we become more proficient with our shaving. If I had taken the moment to wipe the blade, and close it, before ever taking a step, at the very least I would have had a free hand to try and catch myself. And certainly would not have had to worry about slicing myself a fresh orifice.
As my good buddy Hans Solo once said..."Dont get ****y kid!"
Be careful guys, dont forget to be safe at all time!

Glad you're ok (apart from the bump!) and the razor made it!
Thats a good point you make, dont just focus on the razor, make sure the whole area is safe as well..!

I'm glad you are ok. But, is it ok if I find this really funny?

Id like to share a close call. Done with face prep and ready to get at it. I didnt notice I left the bathrroom door slightly ajar. Well blade in hand and ready to do some work, in sneaks my girlfriends siamese cat. I wasnt paying attention and the nosey little guy jumped up on to the sink right in front of my hand with the razor. A few inches to the left kitty may have lost an ear or worse, an eye. Now im always double checking door lock before shave.

Thanked: 481I totally skipped all mention of cat astrophes I have averted! Mine did a similar jump on the sink, just as I was putting blade to face! forget the cat, it almost cost ME an eye!

Wow! That was a close call. Glad to know that you didn't seriously injure yourself.
I recall an earlier post or thread at SRP about certain things that should be avoided or be very careful about or never do when shaving with a str8 razor. Although some of the safety issues were a bit humorous, such as the warning against shaving naked, I remember taking them to heart when I joined SRP last December.
Perhaps one of the SRP veterans could locate it and re-post it."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

Same in the kitchen.
Every thing in its place and a place for everything.
And the shop.
A pot full of boiling water...
A toddler grabbing....
Sharp knives...
Slippery floor...
Helpers with no clue...

I like to live max on the extreme, therefore I boil the water for my tea =D
A while ago I saw in a internet video where a guy was starting to strop, and started to palmrubbing the strop while holding an opened razor. Seeing that blade wave about gave me the chillies.
Doing something "just quickly, no harm done" have potential to cause havoc. I did my worst damage "just reaching over quickly" for a loupe.
Like Aretha Franklin sang, R-E-S-P-E-C-T is needed.
