Shave near Detroit Michign

Hey guys... New guy hear just looking for some info on a good straight razor shave here in Southeast Michigan. I live in a small agriculture Based town about 35 miles north of the Detroit line. Not much around here but I did get a straight razor shave right in town. I wasnt very happy with it (knicks, missed spots, finished with a bic etc) Just wanted to say hi and see if anyone has a suggestion for a good place to get a straight shave here in Detroit or Michigan in general.

I know Jude's barbershop on the east side of the state offers them. Closest one to you would be Lansing though. Jude's Barbershop | Where Guys Get Their Haircut.

There are a few people on here in the Detroit area on here that are in Barber school and I am sure would be happy to help you as well.

I don't know where you can get one at a Barber Shop. I know I get them in my house.

Out of curiosity, why are you looking to get one from a Barber Shop?

Thanks David... as of right now, I am just looking for "the experience". The hot towels etc.. Eventually, I would like to get my own straight, Badger brush, and start doing it myself. If I was going to jump in with two feet and get my own stuff, what would you suggest? I would like to be as cost effective as I can to start. Dont want to buy junk, but dont want to break the bank either!! ha ha lol.

Cost effective as all things in this hobby is subjective . Saying that I would watch the classified for a shave ready razor and then you can get an inexpensive brush & soap cake at Meijers, CVS, or Walgreens. That leaves the strop which you can find a Filly at Ruprazor.com for 15 dollars.

Though it may cost a little more I would check out the straight razor kits at SRD/Classic shaving as well since those come with everything you need and are shave ready and are quality stuff.

Hello Jeff,

I'm new to straight razor shaving, and just had my 7th shave yesterday. Number 8 will be this evening. It is FANTASTIC! I've never had a SR shave at a barber (other than the back of my neck during a haircut as a kid). I agree with David - you can get a great straight razor shave right in your own home. Like any other acquired skill there is a learning curve;from reading the forums it seems to vary from guy to guy. But at least for me, it's been pretty smooth sailing and I'm hooked. One week "in" and I've decided that a safety razor will only touch my face again under the direst of circumstances, although I'm not sure what those circumstances are yet.

If you're looking for "the experience", what better place than your own "shave den". SR shaving is an incredibly relaxing experience - all you have to do is set aside the time. Sometimes I get up a little earlier so I'm not rushed, and other times I wait until I get home and reward myself after a long day at work with some personal R&R time shaving. Once you get your "gear", pick out some good relaxing music, take a hot shower, and indulge yourself in the experience.

Read the WIKI - it's a wealth of information. Take the advice of the fantastic guys on this forum like David and Obie. Take David up on his offer to help you pick out gear. I made some impulse purchases before really reading everything and luckily some-what landed on my feet. My first razor wasn't shave-ready, so I sent it to Lynn at Straight Razor Designs (SRD) to have him hone it. I also ordered a razor from Lynn so I could start shaving while waiting on him to hone the first razor. Lynn has a great DVD on how to shave with a straight razor - well worth the $25. You can order it from SRD.

There is actually a Jude's right near me. I have been in there for a haircut and asked about their use of straights and they said they use the shavette style for hygiene purposes. I need to get a trim here in a week or so and will ask if they are willing to use my blade on me as I have never had the "experience" of someone else shaving me.
