Dovo-TI Comparison

I just came across an alternative that I wanted to run by you guys... I saw that I could get that Dovo handle separately from classicshaving.com. What if I took an older and serviceable 5/8 or 6/8 TI blade (*) and mounted it on the Dovo handle? Here's the link:

(*) The reason I'd use an old one would be b/c I think it's a sin to dismantle a brand spankin' new TI razor just for the blade. It would be better to get an older one with a handle that's beyond restoration and put the blade to a good use. That way I get the best of both worlds and extend the life of a classic :)

Good luck finding one. I've been looking for months. This baby got an awesome review from Lynn, even by TI standards and I don't think you'd want to trade those scales in.

My personal preference is for the TI Sheffield Silver Steel.

It shaves very nicely and thats what we are after.

I have both Dovo's and TI razors. I am a big fan of german made products, and the Dovo's that I have are excellent shavers, but I have to admit the TI razors are a slight cut above.

Stay away from the Pakistani crapp, that was your first mistake. Either the Dovo or the TI razors are worlds above and not even comparable.

I dont have any SS razors of any kind so I cannot comment on stainless steel, but this is because I dont have success sharpening stainless steel knifes. I prefer carbon steel. End of story.

I dont agree that the Dovos are better looking than the TI razors. I am a big fan of the blonde horn TI razor, and others.

Purchase the razor for function, not looks. If you replace new scales for other scales that make the razor prettier, you have de-valued the original razor. Remember that form follows function.

One last thought, if you want a good razor consider the TI SRP limited addition. You are now a member of this group and this is available to you. You wont be dissapointed.

To me, function comes #1, but if I can also improve the form, then why not. My philosophy is that it's better to add a few modern improvements to an old car and drive it daily than to beautifully restore it with stock partns and keep it in a garage.

I have 4 TIs and many more Dovos, including a Begischer Lowe and Micarta (ss). The TIs (silver steel) are the better shavers by far. If you get a fine wood handle, the TI looks better than the Dovos. The Dovos, like the horn handle are flashier, but the TIs have a lot more class.

Before you buy the handles, make sure they'll fit.

If you want the best of both worlds, get a used TI and buy some fancy handles from Bill Ellis (see billysblades.com).

There's this particular Dovo handle that I like. It should accept most 5/8 and 6/8 blades. I already picked up an older Taylor's 6/8 which would be a good candidate for it and I'm looking in on a W&B. The Taylor's Eye on the DOVO handle will be used for car/bus/train trips and the occasional daily shave. I'm planning on getting a new TI, which will become my regular daily shaver. If I get the WB, it will be for all of my plane trips, and ofcourse the occasional daily shave as well. Yeah, the psychosis is taking over me :D

OK. I'm the odd man out. TI's are good but in my opinion, they're not that good. I'd probably by one of them over a Dovo, but I feel that there are a handful of vintage razors that I feel are better than either one to me. There are some new old stock razors that I think are outstanding, too, not th least of which is the Bartmann.

You're not there yet. Beware when you start buying razors for which can't anticipate a use other than in a rotation.

The premium Bartmann's are great, as are the better Dorkos (like 1217) and some Wachers (worked back), but they have nothing over the top grade TIs as far as shaving goes, and the TI is probably a tad better. Overall, the those German razors may be a better razor because of the classic artistry. And you can go to John Crowley's shop and find a great collection.
