Default Some time spent with Robert Williams

I have to tell you guys i had the pleasure of spending time with Robert Williams this afternoon and it's tough to describe, words like friendly and helpful probably start things off. Once we got to the razors i brought over words like expert, knowledgable and Surgeon quickly came to mind. He showed me some of his various hones and even better began honing up my razors as i watched and i was basically amazed by his technique and his ability to describe the whole process so i could digest it and learn as we (he) went on. The razors i brought over were not in the best of shape, one had a bit of a 'smile' so he had to establish a new bevel, which he made look like a piece of cake. The light and even touch he is able to use on the razors is really amazing, it truly looks effortless. Another pleasure was seeing some of his vast collection of razors as he humbly showed me some beauties, some of which he makes the scales for himself in his workshop out wood and horn, amazing craftsmanship! His generosity with his time was only matched as he offered me a double duck goldedge for a paltry sum, probably a tenth of what he could of ebayed it for these days. It was all much appreaciatted and I cant wait to catch my next shave! A huge Thank you Robert.

oh i almost left out the paper towel test, forget hanging hairs, with a keen eye and steady hand a run on top of the looped paper towel as he does seams to pick out even the slightest tug/imperfection on an edge.

    James,

You are very fortunate to be able to visit and observe
a honemeister. I wish I knew of someone close to me
like this. I sometimes wonder if there are anyother
straight shavers in WV. Hell at times I think I'm
the only bluecollar type guy who even shaves.

It really is something else to have someone as experienced as Robert so close, this forum goes leaps and bounds beyond where i would be without it but to the same extent seeing someone so skilled actually work the magic on a hone does the same thing. i liken it to the first time i entered one of the great chats here, you can learn a lot from just posting but in the chats you get immediate answers and forward your knowledge very quick, the in person experience is really something else, taking your impression of what you read in the help files and the seeing it in practice can reinvent your thinking on what you should be doing. I guess i really am pretty darn lucky!!

hope im not embarrasing you Robert, i really appreciatted your help

Here at SRP, Robert is Papa Bull. Robert also has a site called Straight Edge Razors, and there he is Robert Williams. Robert has posted several of his razors here on SRP.

Thanks! I didn't expect all that. I was happy to show a bit about razor maintenance and help you get the best out of your razors. I enjoyed the visit and look forward to chatting with you again soon.
