Noob: First Razor Purchase from eBay

Hey folks. I'm here because I want to learn from some people who have a passion for this hobby.

I'm planning on getting a razor with disposable blades from a local shop to learn with, and eventually it will be retired to my travel bag.

I also just bought a razor from ebay:

I'm curious if anyone knows anything about this piece. How much did I overpay? Any info would be great.

Hey, that's good news. I had my fingers crossed, because I have zero knowledge about brands or models.

I'd love any history on the company or the model if anyone has any reference books lying around.

You sure got a bargain there, with all the money you saved you could post it out to a honemeister ( ala Bill for example ) and ask them to hone it up for you, with a nice blade honed to perfection, your gunna be shavin in no time.

By the way, have you got a strop and badger brush etc?

Not as of yet. I am graduating from college in a week, so I am trying to keep my buget tight in case the job situation does not resolve itself immediately. I'd like to give the disposable razor a try before putting any more money into a hobby that I may not enjoy, however if I found a deal I could not pass up...

I'm fairly certain that you can get the razor honed
for less than a disposable would cost. You might
as well start out with a shave ready straight.
I would be willing to bet that once you start out
with a straight, you won't look back.

A follow up. A boar bristle brush would work just fine
when starting out - a Burma Shave at Wal Mart is
something like $5.00. Check with Tony Miller on
this forum for a strop.

The absolute best one I've found has been the Crabtree & Evelyn Edwin Jagger brush. $35. Outstanding "best badger" (mid-grade) brush. You can get a pure badger for less, but I think the "best" is my favorite. Softer and more water-retentive than pure, but a heckuva lot less expensive than silvertip. You might get lots of recommendations on a brush, but truly believe you can't beat this brush for the price. I like the Omega boar brush, too. ($12.99 at Target for the monster version, or $10 from Old Dominion Soap company, which has a smaller Omega that comes with its own stand). The C&E is an incredible brush for the money, though. Great quality, and looks outstanding (well, as good as a wad of animal hair in a handle can look anyway ), and is a great, great brush. And that's all I got to say 'bout that. mmmhmmm.
