Do you really need handles?

I am wondering this for the time being whilst I slowly build my new scales on my crappy blade.

Due to lack of finances and tools I cant rush this.

So I am wondering either if anyone feels like making me some cheap scales, I don't care what the material is as long as it works. Mine is broken on one side above the main pivot point right on the pin itself...

I have some beach wood which I can send out, or possibly some antler in exchange. Also I am a leather worker by trade, I can make someone a nice pouch...In my own style, it's different but cool too. Of course you would have to send me something to use in the mean time anyway, so I can custom fit it...


Or until I get something sorted is it easier harder to work a shave with no handles???

I would not recommend a Western straight without handles. They protect the blade from damage, and you or youngsters from the blade. Furthermore, they help balance the blade while shaving.

If you look at Japanese straight razors, or the 'Purist' by SRP member and razor smith Robert Wiliams, you will see that both designs have extended tangs in order to balance the weight of the blade with, in place of a handle.

You do not NEED handles on a Western straight but it strongly advised.

Japanese str8 razors don't have scales..1 handle..thats it ;=)..I saw an older post where some creative person made a GD into a Japanese str8...sound familiar?

8thsinner, PM your mailing address and I'll send you a set of scales. They're plastic, but they're new and of high quality. However, it'll probably be Thursday morning before I'm able to put them in the mail.

pice of tape pen/pensil/piece of wood a little back on top of tang
could give you a mock up balance untill the scales arrive

The scales were just put in the mail. Unfortunately, the postal clerk said it might take as long as ten days for the package to get to Belfast from Louisiana.

How about some magnets? A little denser than popsicle sticks et al, and hassle free adherence.

Magnets certainly is an interesting idea. I happen to have about 80x3mm super rare earth magnets to play with.

Might try that before I get these scales on. let you know how it goes.
