Hi Guys

Went out for the night and left my wife to watch...first time on ebay for her and she may have got carried away...opinions on the set welcome.
Slightly anxious on the hairline crack as per description.
Hmm...Its hard to say until you see them in person but for a total price of around $63.00 USD (if my conversion is correct), I cant imagine you could have done THAT bad. Even if you only get one shaver and three project razors (not to mention a neat box) you did ok.

As you say,until they arrive cannot tell. The pics look ok but I know that can be deceptive. Box looks in good condition.
If you don't like 'em, I'll make you a helluva deal on 'em.

If this is a good buy...it will cost me a lot more than this :hmmm: I can feel a new outfit coming and it aint for me. If it turns out to be poor at least I can blame her !
What do you think of the razors themself...size.shape etc...maybe need a lot of work looking at the single blade picture.
If this turns out to be worthwhile....possibility my daughter will be checking ebay....this could cost me plenty. :cry:

Your wife is a keeper. My girlfriend won't let me go out alone, and I can only imagine what it would be like if I married her.:fim: The razors look like they'll need minimal work. I think she did good.

Those razors look pretty nice. The fact that you got 4 razors for under $100 is great deal in my opinion. Even if you have to re-scale one or more of them, you're still making out pretty well.
Considering their age and the fact that they're in a set, I suspect these are very high quality razors. These sorts of sets were often owned by the well-to-do of the time and I wouldn't be surprised if the scales are real ivory. The light staining on the shank and tang should be able to be buffed out.

Oh, the razors? Well I think they are worth $120-$140 as a set of 4, and are probably of good quality. That would be based on the idea that any man that bought a set of 4 razors is probably someone who knows what he is doing. A beginner buys one razor, a journeyman would buy a 7 day set. But only a real expert would realize that a 4 day set is the exact number needed for daily shaving. Based on my experience looking a pics on Ebay I'd say the steel is "Select Sheffield", is of moderate weight and will shave well.
The top razor has more scale "shading" which may mean that blade was his travel blade, and the second razor looks like it was his daily shaver, note the hone wear. Other than that, I think those are nice blades. Anything else I can help you with?

Oh, sorry. Like anything else that is subjective its hard to explain. The sets are great, you can use one razor and don't need to learn other weights, widths, stropping, and honing variances. A 2 razor set leaves you with a challenge to shave everday if one razor gets dinged (convential wisdom of the day said you shouldn't use the same razor twice in a row). The 7 day set was designed to give you a different razor for each day, hardly needed. I know guys buy 20 razors and are still not happy, but I"m talking about guys that just shave, not our obsessiveness types. Most guys just bought a few razors and made do. Seems to me that a 4 day set would be perfect for the guy that really knew what he was doing.Quote:

LOL haha. My future wife may buy me a razor but I am pretty sure it will only be for a birthday present or something...I dont think Im going to come home at the end of the week with her showing me the razor she got me. Actually, after the first 20 or 30, she won't be able to tell you've added another two, three, or four to the collection. If she notices some really spectacular new acquisition, I just tell her it's a razor on loan from X-man or Neenad ;) . Fortunately, she's never pressed me on just when I plan to return all of these razors to my friends :D .

I think that because they lack a popular maker's mark (Wade and Butcher, Henckel, Dovo, Puma, etc), they were overlooked by however many people saw the auction. If it's Sheffield steel they used in their construction, it's safe to assume that they will hold a great edge; and as the guys in this thread have already mentioned, the fact that they're in an assembled set with a fancy box indicates that the company who produced them wasn't catering to your average consumer. Heck, owning a four-bladed set of any razor brand seems somewhat extravagant, let alone these, which seem to be very nicely constructed. If it weren't for the shank markings, you really wouldn't be able to tell the difference between these and any other of the more popular brands. If a similar set of Wade and Butcher razors were to be listed, they'd sell for more.
The auction mentions three hairline cracks, so I guess that could be considered an issue. "Hairline" could be an inappropriate assessment of the cracks, though, so you may get lucky.
Yeah, use us, out of States guys. Clever. That way you can keep your "loaners" longer. But, watch out, with one of Bill's or Maestros, you'r wife wouldn't believe you, that kind of razor is not a loaner :D ;)Quote:

Well yeah, I figured that was a given. I'd actually planned to use Ed or somebody else she's already heard of, but I don't really have to. A couple of months ago I started with, "Ok, I've got some bad news". Then I told her I got 5 Dubl Ducks on eBay and she said, "Oh don't scare me like that I thought it was something serious".
