Default What I Wish I'd Known

We spend a lot of time on SRP educating newbies, just as those before us spent time educating us. And, at times, they come back saying what advice or suggestion helped them the most. I would like to start a thread that is a little more retrospective...

When starting to shave with straight razors...

What advice helped you the most?
What advice would have helped you the most that you learned yourself?

    I'll go first.

Once my whiskers were shaved to skin level, even though not near BBS, I did reasonably well. But, by that time I had a good case of razor burn!

I would have benefited if I had shaved with a safety razor first, shaving down to skin but not BBS, and finished off with a straight razor.

That would have allowed me to learn how to deal with longer whiskers gradually, and a little less painfully.
