Fountain pens must be way behind the times, since celluloid was created in 1856. ( 1870-1880 celluloid handles became common on razors ) IMHO the razor appears to be close to the time frame in question. As far as the other topics here that have been brought up, I think the rabbit with the pancake on it's head is about to make an appearance.:eek:

Well regardless of what we think, someone believes that its real...it sold for $2,743.32!!!


OH and BTW, EVERYTHING this guy has ever bought on ebay is titanic related....so I dont know if that makes him an expert or an emotional buyer....

JL, I don't know if he believes it is real or just that there is a chance that it is real and he is willing to risk 1500 pounds on it.

If I had the money I would look at it this way:

1. If it is fake and I buy it I am out 1500 pounds. Can I afford to loose the money? It is always a gamble even when you have authenticating documents. Documents can be faked much easier than antiques. It is a falacy to think that you can eliminate risk out of any decision. You can only minimize it. Risk is always there.

2. If it is real and I don't buy it then I miss an opportunity that may not come again. The buyer may get it authenticated and put it up for auction in an auction house where it will go for many times more than 1500 pounds and out of my reach.

Then it is a matter of making up your mind which one of these outcomes you can live with easier based on your presonality and perceived probabilities.

Myself, I am a risk taker and would find option 1 easier to live with (if I could afford it) than a missed opportunity of option 2. Others would find option one intolerable regardless of their financial status and would prefer to go with option 2. Don't expect them to have priceless collectables they picked up for a song. They would rather pay more but not get screwed.

Everyone has their own approach in making decisions and weighing risks. We all think that we live by what is right but in reality we all live by what we are comfortable with.

I took the liberty to email the winner and see what light he could shed on the subject. He collects Titanic items and might know a bit more than us on the subject. I find it all very intriguing and want the plot to thicken even more!
