Oops I attempted to carry a straight razor onto a plane!

Well I unpacked all my shaving supplies in a rush to the Newark, NJ airport to catch a flight down to augusta, GA to do some work tonight at Fort Gordon, but I forgot to unpack my 8/8 worked back Friodur! Well the first thing the TSA rep did was run his finger over the blade and although I was hoping he would lose a finger for being such a moron, he didnt. Then several other TSA agents attempted to examine the razor which I quickly put an end too.

Then the police arrived and proceeded to nudge me in my bad shoulder to get my attention as I was on the phone trying to rebook my flight that was due to leave in 5 minutes at that point. I tried not to be to pissed off at the cop since she had no idea I had a bad shoulder, but Im sure I was noticeably agitated. The police attempted to ask me the same questions the TSA had, which was "why did I have the razor", I told them "I shave with it", but it was easy to see they didnt believe me they and started giving me a hard time.. I might have made my life easier by showing the police some of my cretentials and/or stack of fop / pba cards, but I was so embarased at my stupidity, I decided it wasnt worth alerting my company or any of my friends that I had been so dumb.

The tsa then proceeded to measure the blade repeatedly against a steel ruler and Im sure mangaed to dull my newly Lynn honed blade against my repeated requests to turn it around (Lynn if you are reading this, I may be sending it back for a touchup as I wont be able to strop it on the pasted strop due to the upcoming surgery).

Finally they let me go and said I would receive a warning or summons in the mail. I was noticeably not phased by this statement because my company and several agencies and other companies need me to fly all the time, and they tend to handle these type of situations very quickly for us. I did not mention this tidbit of information, but it was easy to see they were a little bit confused and disapointed that I was not worried about this.

So anyway here I am in the airport waiting for my next flight which gets me into augusta at 11:50 pm, 10 minutes before I have to be on sight and on base....ohwell I guess they will just have to wait lol!

I promised bill I wouldnt peek, and I wont...I am very excited about it being a surprise, and because I trust Bill's taste Im confident I'll be happy with the result. Now, if it was being made by someone who's work I had not seen before I might be tempted to peak because I would wonder if they understood what I wanted, but that isnt the case.

I will however read the thread on christmas day or the day after so I can see any photos and comments that have been posted about it. I am very excited to see photographs documenting the razors creation. :y

Some guys voiced doubts whether you'll be able to lift it high enough to reach your face... So, you should take a look and tell Bill to cut it down a bit, as it's too big!!!

Yeah I also voted you wouldn't look but I am worried because the pink coloring isn't too manly. I think Bill was doing drugs or something. Oh well better big than pretty..

Yes, this was definitely dumb move on my part. Im sure the fact that the port authority of NY shut down some airports temporarily due to a bomb scare didnt help, since they also run the Newark airport.

I wanted to explain to them that if I was going to kill anyone that it wouldnt be with such a beautiful razor, as it might dull the blade or possibly damage the pins or scales, but I decided to keep my mouth shut lol :ziplip:

Thats what everyone said about my 9/8's lol and its one of my best shavers! Besides I have been dreaming of a 12/8s since I heard of their existance sometime back. Besides Bill already warned me he thought it ws a bit large hehe.

Might be time to throw a padded mailer into your carry-on as well. Put your name & address plus plenty of postage on it. You might be able to toss it into a mailbox somewhere outside the secured permiter of the x-ray machines.

I wouldnt trust anyone but a post office with important mail like that, and the only airport I know of hat has one is in Denver :(

They are noy permitted to confiscate any legally owned/transported personal personal items. They ust give you the option to check your bag and go back through security, if you choose not to take that option then they remove the items from your back. I chose to recheck the bag....unfortunately the sewecond oleg of my flight got cancled and now I am attempting t o uncheck my baggage grrr....

Yeah, they gaveme the option, but my luggage was already checked, and I didn't want to miss the flight. So, bye bye lighter.

I haven't travelled in a couple of years, so I'd like to know if they don't allow lighters and matches, what options do smokers have if they're connecting other than asking for a light?

You're apparently allowed two or three books of cardboard matches.

I could wreak a heck of a lot more havoc with a couple of books of matches than with my Zippo, had I been inclined to do so. As for quitting, I did make a promise to a certain young lady that I'd do it before my 30th, but I still have 3 productive years until then :D

I think I might be able to outdo your airport fiasco. After I joined last May I was sitting in a parking lot outside a FedEx/Kinkos for a WiFi connection which is where I'm sitting now, by the way. I was on the SRP site reading entries in the forums and scrolling through some of the photos. So... I look up and notice three SJPD cars. No big deal as they congregate at the Starbucks across the lot. Well, one pulls up a few feet away and the officer gets out and approaches and I figured it would be the usual "Who are you, what are you doing here, lets see some I.D.". Nooooooooo !!! Instead the cop says that somebody called in saying they thought I was looking at kiddie porn on my computer! Talk about a surprise. :eek: So they get me out of my vehicle and do a pat down search, ask all manner of questions and want to inspect my computer's history to see what websites I had been accessing. Well I mentioned I had been on this site and I used straight razors which one of the cops said was kinda creepy :shrug: but I couldn't figure out why anybody would think I was looking at kiddie porn until several days later when I remembered that some of the photos in the gallery were of kids shaving. and so somebody walking by must have seen somebody's kid shirtless and all lathered up and immediately jumped to conclusions. Well after they ran a check on me and satisfied themselves that I wasn't up to anything untoward they let me go. Needless to say I'd like to know who dropped the dime as this is a person who desperately wants my foot knee deep in his/her/it's a**. :rant: So next time any of you wants to post a gag photo of your kid shaving please make certain he's fully clothed, a trench coat would be sufficient.....

People freak out over that way too much. A politician could run a successful campaign saying "if you don't vote for me you support kiddie-porn". I remember someone freaking out over Putin patting a kid on the rump, which was a perfectly normal non-sexual gesture but quite a few people here in North America took it way out of proportion. I wish we didn't have fear-oriented media.

Ya my wife made that promise too...as soon as we got back from our honeymoon she was going to quit. She probably smokes 5 - 10 cigerrettes a day...obviously I am not as important to her as they are, cause she is still smoking just as much 6 months later....ohwell, I guess I know where I stand :rolleyes:

Unless they had gotten a warrant (which they would most probably not have) you could have refused the search. The computer in the car should be treated the same as the computer in the home since in most states castle doctin extends into the automobile. Probable cause is enough for them to ask to search your vehicle, but without a warrant they cant do it under most circumstances as far as I know...of course I am a bit rusty on my constitutional law...especially with the patriot act coming into play...

As an ex-smoker almost two years now it was the hardest thing I had ever done. My kids pleaded with me to quit, my wife (an ex-smoker 13yrs) nagged me to quit but it wasn't till I was ready that I was able to do it. Encourage her don't chastize it doesn't work. I hope she can quit it is a terrible addiction.

Josh, it's a hard habit to kick. I know. I've tried every method of quitting there is, several times over. Once you're hooked, some studies have shown that it's more difficult to kick than heroin. They should just outlaw tobacco but the lobby's too strong and the tax dollars are too tasty.

You can't smoke on flights, and I assume you'd be able to get a light at some store during a layover.

One time I got stuck with one of my really good cigar lighters, and I had time, so I went to the luggage service office and had them mail it to my home. They did it free.

Some airports (Newark included, I think) have those things where you can mail stuff home right outside of security. For postage plus a hefty handling fee, of course.

So, when they opened the razor, did they thumb the edge, like they were checking the sharpness of a kitchen knife?

My brother did that once to one of my razors I just finished honing and I thought I was going to kill him. He saw me tense up and thought it was because I thought he'd cut himself.

When the razor was out of his hand (shortly after the incident), I gave him the what-not.

I AM amazed that they did not take it. They take knives and scissors with a quickness!

OH, and about that beastly razor Bill is making, I NEVER saw a wrist brace on a straight razor before! I hope your shoulder is up to snuff because that puppy looks heavy!

Bummmmmmmmer. I bought one of those traveling containers from Classicshaving that has the paddle strop and the pouch to put the razor in. I check it all the time without problem. No way am I dealing with those gifted TSA Agents.....hahahahaha.

of criminals. Just like with illegal drugs you would then

I know that I've mentioned this one before
but here goes.

Husband, Wife and 2 year old son. Son has Asthma.
He is too little to use an inhaler so he has to use
a nebulizer. So the parents bring along a battery
powered one in case the little boy has an attact.
The TSA goons would not allow them to bring the
nebulizer on the plane. The nebulizer is an allowable
item.

So this is what people are up against.

I could have refused but I figured they would consider a refusal a red flag and wasn't in the mood for more hassle than necessary. Besides, if they wanted to find out what websites I'd been to they could probably get that info from T-Mobile or FedEx/Kinkos anyway.

The red flag doesn't matter. You still have your constitutional rights and why make it easy on them to invade your privacy? I especially hate it when they gull innocent people into allowing them to invade by privacy by using the "if you're really innocent, prove it." It's the oldest trick in the book. Remember that any reasonable constituion/charter specifically states that they have to prove that you're guilty and not the other way around. Therefore, use the politely indignant response:
"I am sorry constable, but as a citizen in good standing I have every right to refuse you access to my computer without a warrant. In addition to that I CATEGORICALLY deny the accusations and I am OUTRAGED at the malice behind them. If you want to examine my browsing history, go through the proper channels and get warrants to get the information from me, my ISP or my mobile company. Otherwise you may carry on and go after REAL offenders. Thank you very much and have a nice day. Carry on [with a tone of finality]"

The only problem with that response is that in the "real world" it's likely to be followed by, "Please step out of the car, sir." The question is always whether you're willing to go to court to vindicate your rights, or whether it's easier to just give in and get it over with.

Also remember that if the police have a reasonable suspicion that "criminal activity is afoot" they can briefly detain you to investigate, and if they have probable cause to believe you're guilty of any crime, they can arrest you. So, I don't know, if you're parked in a handicapped space, look out. :P They can talk to you, and ask for your consent to a search, with no suspicion at all. If they've arrested you, they might be able to search your car, either as a search incident to lawful arrest or under the automobile exception. New Jersey has limited the former with regards to cars, but it depends on your jurisdiction.

So, like many things, "it depends." I wouldn't consent to the search either, but then realize there's at least some chance they will do it anyway.

My problem with this is that it's a slippery slope that's all too real. An incident happens, some lunatic kills 50 people, the media starts a panic, a politician capitalizes on it and fuels it to get a few extra votes and then proposes an invasive measure. Soon enough I start hearing "if you have nothing to hide, you don't have anything to worry about." Well, I never stole even a stick of chewing gum, if I kicked somebody's a** it was always in self-defense, my life's squeaky clean other than a few speeding tickets but I still wouldn't consent to arbitrary anal probings and cameras in my house and car even if they think i'm the killer's best friend and accomplice.

I have found that if you are polite and confident, defending your rights works quite well. I have never had a major problem, but I admit when I am in the wrong, even if I get caught speeding (which is VERY rare), but I am sure that being aware of my rights has helpedme quite a bit. I treat anyone else as I would like to be treated, and we are usually able to meet on a common ground. I would also like to think that state and federal employees, especially the police think twice regarding violation of the rights of others now that they can be sued individually outside of their department for these violations. Regardless, I am always a little extra polite (but not easily walked on) with everyone including police because I am almost always armed which adds a responsibility on my part to make sure I remain calm and level headed.
