Hi Guys,
Been a while since we have don an SRP giveaway where a few of us donate shave ready razors for some new folks who either don't have or can't afford a razor to start out with. As always, we only ask that they pass on a razor to a new person down the road when they are able.
We have had members both donate razors and help out with the drawing. Anyone interested?
I will be donating 3 razors this time.

As my rotation is growing fairly large and I do have some duplicate types, I will pledge one, just gotta decide which one lol.
I would also like to invite manufacturers and dealers in other shave-related items to join in.
I'll donate 2 razors and 5 strops. Some of the strops will be with linen, some will be plain leather. I'll be sure to avoid blemishes in the hide. Should I make them 2.5 or 3 inch wide?

This is great guys and we welcome anyone else who wants to contribute.
Let's see who wants to do what and give what. Gather the names and try to get stuff out to the people in the next 30 or so days if possible.

I think I can probably spare a few razors for the give away. One of them will be the tonsorial gem that I received in the last give away. It is one of the first razors I've owned, but I'd like to keep the spirit alive of passing it along to some other lucky shaver.
And let's keep it on the downlow a little bit so that just those who will participate will get one? I remember a LOT of people coming out of the woodwork last time who we've hardly/not heard from since.
That's true, but probably a little difficult to pull off. What I suggest is having a draw, but weighting each persons chances based on the number of posts they've made when the draw starts. That way, those who have contributed, have a more deserved better chance of snagging a razor. Though, these giveaways are meant for the newbies, so I'm not sure how effectively it would work. Figured I'd just throw in the idea though.Quote:

This is an interesting idea. I want to throw out however that, just because we're not hearing from them doesn't mean they're not benefitting from what they receive. There's no way for us to tell if they're just the quiet types and many are like that.Quote:

I could get a mug, brush and soap from Target for cheap, but I am really in need of a decent strop in order to get started shaving, at least until I can get one of my own. So if you guys need someone to give a strop to I would be glad to take it at least until I can get one of Tony Miller's sets.

Chris, PM me your address. I have a second that Tony gave me when I purchased his #1 strop that will work just fine and most importantly get you going.
I need to saddle soap it as it has some red paste on it but I would be happy to send it to you.

As the proposed postcount idea. Yes, some of us don't know when to shut up :w . And some of us tend to be the silent type, most certainly not me. I'd hate to think I'm getting rewarded for adding to the website's bandwidth and server load.

Wow, please keep us posted on how to get into the drawing. This looks like some great stuff that will get quite a few people on the right track!
Very interesting. Though I'm not sure how you would choose how to give it to? I'm sure that there's plenty on newbies here who would love to get their hands on some of this stuff (not exculding myself from this :w ), but I think I lot of them wouldn't think that they could justify sayinf "PLEASE CAN I HAVE SOME OF IT? PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE" (again, not exculding myself from this :w ).
This is a lot of stuff for one person. Personally I would not use all of it so I would have to give some of it away to some other newbies (perticually Tony's #1 Best strops since I just bought one the other month, and maybe the soap, and any brushes (I'm happy with my Kent BK2).
I think a raffel would be a good idea, but how would you say how would got into it and how wouldn't?

At the moment I have only 1 of everything, being relatively new here.
My current house renovation does not allow me to buy much new stuff.
However, I plan to continue restoring razors after I finish Nelson's honing challenge, so maybe I'll be able to donate something next time.
Hi; I was one of the newbies from one of the last giveaways. I actually won a razor then, but have passed it on to a young police officer who is very interested in learning to shave with a straight. In fact he told me that he's registered here, but I haven't seen any postings from him as yet.
I don't post much either, as I don't really have any expertise to pass on. Just want to say that I do read this forum quite often and really appreciate all that I've learned here. Especially honing techniques and skin stretching. The stretching has really helped me in comfortably using a straight to shave around my beard. I stretched the skin before, but only by sticking out my chin, etc. What has really helped is using the off hand to stretch with. Seems pretty simple, but what a difference!
I'm a Newbie as well, but I will gladly pass on one of my razors.
Being a Newbie, my honing skills are not going to be the best:o , but in the spirit of this appeal, I am glad to share what I have.
This forum has given me a lot - it will be nice to pay something back!
PS. as a newbie, I'm also short of a decent strop if anyone can help;)
OK.....Here's what I'm thinking. Like last time, you guys can send all the stuff to me and then we'll have a two weekperiod for people to enter their names. Need a volunteer to keep track of the names and once gathered, a volunteer to put the names in a hat and draw them. I can ship everything out like we have done in the past.
I think we can probably start gathering names next week once the volunteers step up.

Lynn, it makes sense to me. I'd be happy to help with the gathering of names and drawing or whatever is needed/desired. However I have a few questions..
1. By "people enter their names" I'm assuming you want those interested in the items to give submit their own names? Rather than for people to nominate others.
2. Is this going to be one drawing for everything? Or broken up?
3. Would you, and all the other extremely generous donators like people to submit their names on a wants/needs list?
My thoughts...
I see two ways to make this whole thing have the greatest impact on the largest number of members as a whole.
1. You have people submit lists of things they would like out of the raffle from greatest to least desire. Then the person takes all the names and draws one out of the hat. That person gets their top item. Next name is drawn and that person gets their most desired item that is still on the list. If no item is left that's on that person's list we could either decide skip that person (IE: Lynn submits his name for the revisor and only the revisor. It's reasonable to assume he doesn't really need/want anything else.) Or just give said person some semi random item still left in the drawing.
2. You draw a name for the top item on the list and just move down the list. This method would be simpler to employ, however there is no consideration given for actual wants/needs.
Like myself for instance... I should have two shave ready razors soon. I have a mug, an old badger brush from my grandfather, a Dovo strop, and soap's cheap. However I own no hones other than some arkansas bench stones, so the paddle strop would be handy to make into a pasted hone. The Lynn honing would make my TI razor truly shave ready and add a third razor to my lineup. But some of the other items, though I don't think I would turn any of it down (except for the Lynn video as I already own it), would be better served on other people.
With all that said, I understand work involved in organizing the request lists. I'm more than willing to volunteer my help in that. People could post here or PM me their lists of the items they want/need. And I could either forward on a compiled list to the "official drawing agent" or I could draw out names. As this whole thing is only possible because of the generosity of it's donators I will let yall decide how you want to run things. Let me know if there's anything I can do.
Kyle and Stacy, any chance of you guys getting together and figuring out how you want to take down the names? If folks want to start sending me stuff, I can catalog it for the drawing and mailing after the drawing.
Let me know folks. I would prefer that you guys do the drawing based on all the work that keeping the list will be.

I'll be sending a couple of razors to ya Lynn. One is a 5/8 Wade & Butcher #1175 with "Gentleman's Razor" etched on the blade.
I'll make a post in the "Shaving Stuff for the Troops" thread (in the General forum as a sticky) on the other razor. Call it an incentive ;)
As far as gathering names goes, I think it's a self-regulating system. Once we're ready create a sign-up thread that is open for two weeks. Let guys sign-up, close the thread, and use those names in the drawing.
Is it ok to make a suggestion?
With all the donations I'd say make "kits". If colleen is adding soap, Tony and myself adding strops, you can take a single razor, single strop and single bar of soap, until each accessory runs out. That would make a nice "kit" for a name to receive. Keep joining it together until only one type of item is available, first names drawn gets the best, on down to single items. Thus so many people would get a razor, strop and soap, maybe some would get just a razor and soap, and some either just razors or just soaps depending on quantities of each donated.
I'll be happy to help with this Lynn if you want. I'll need to drive over to drop the strops and razors off anyways.

I'm putting a 7/8 Filarmonica up for grabs for guys who donate shaving supplies for our troops overseas. See the thread for all the details. I'll be drawing for this razor the same time as the real drawing.
The kits are a wonderful idea for those that have nothing. But I think most people find these forums after being impulsive and buying at least part of it. Or having received part of the items as a gift. I still think, though, slightly more work, that keeping things broken up into singular items allows people to fill in the gaps in their wants/needs lists. Kyle's idea of just creating a thread for a week or two as a sign up would make things very transparent and easy. If we kept everything as individual items we could have people make a list of wants/needs in the forum thread. As names are drawn fufill the list. If the number of names is less than the number of items, we could always roll back to the first pick.. IE: Round 2 of the SRP draft so to speak. Thoughts? :shrug:
As a newbie, I just wanted to provide my perspective, in case it would help. I found SRP during my search for information before diving into the world of straight razors. Based upon the advice here, I have proceeded slowly so that I am informed as possible before 'pulling the trigger'. I just received Lynn's DVD and I am absorbing as much as I can. (BTW - Great job Lynn!) I am sure some newbies have dived right in and are lacking just a few things. I am sure there are others who have yet to make their first straight razor purchase. Either way you guys decide, I know any newbie would be estatic for anything you generous veterans care to share. Thanks for making this place seem more of a home than just a web site.
My perspective is that I have been wetshaving for awhile but am just trying to learn the straight now. So I have many supplies (soap, brush, mug) and would not benefit from a kit as much as someone starting from scratch. I could really benefit from a well honed, shave-ready razor.Quote:

I don't but I got a couple of extra razors (1 coming from Ivo) that I wanted to finish before PMing you for it.
I gave a bunch of stuff to a new guy here who was asking for a razor, promptly never heard from him again afterward. Probably should have donated through this instead.
