I'm new to straight razor shaving but very interested in learning more while I work on getting myself the equipment.
Are there any meetups in the NYC area that I might be able to attend?
Thanks,
-KreyZe

If there is one, I'd probably head down for it. I have family in the area, so I could make a weekend of it. I'll keep an eye on this thread.
I know there are a bunch of memers in the area, so I'm sure a meet could be put together.
Maybe I'll ask in the general forum if people are interested in a NYC meetup since it doesn't seem like this get together sub-forum gets as much traffic.
Thanks,

Yea I'm not sure why there isn't much traffic through here... Meetups are always great. I check in this place all the time.
Hi guys,
I check in every now and then....keep me posted if there is a meet.
:beer1:
:beer2:
I'm down. I'm in town.
If anyone is still interested, I'd like to try to revive this idea.
i'td be awesome if we could get this going. even if it wasn't in nyc but somewhere in the tristate, it'd still be pretty fun. if anyone has any suggestions or comments about it i'd definitely like to hear it.
I live about an hour fifteen from the city, I'd be down too as I'm still new to this as well
it's exciting to see some interest. hopefully we can get the ball rolling and establish some sort of plan.
I nominate McSorely's pub.
Count me in. I live in Westchester but work in NYC.
I'm all for meets at pubs, but keep in mind it may not be a great atmosphere for show & tell or demo's... Unless we can book a room or something.
I'm going to be in the area sometime in Feb to visit family, but not really sure on the details. After that, I'll be down again at the end of April for a family event. Heck, I'd prolly drive down if I'm free, it's less than one tank each way.
if we can get a room or some space to ourselves i'm all for it!
I haven't been to McSorely's too much lately, I don't know if they do private rooms or not. I'll put a call in perhaps later tonight. Any other suggestions? I might have a large apartment we can use depending on the time,
I doubt McSorely's has a private room. It's not really that kind of place as I remember...
I'm sure there are plenty of places in the city that have a room that would work, the only question is: What does it cost? Ideally we can get a private spot without a room fee if we can guarantee a minimum bar tab. The responses have been pretty sparse so far. Any ideas for how we can get an accurate count on who would show and what dates work best? I don't even know if these posts are showing up on the homepage...
EDIT: It does show up....
In WNY, the only thing that really get the ball rolling is when someone (usually Joed or Carriem, since they host) sets a date. People will then say if they can make it or not. It's too bad when not everyone can, but you can't please everyone.
So first lets plan a date. Then we can start taking RSVPs. As far as any costs involved will depend on the day of the week we go. A room on a Friday night might cost more than a night during the week. With that being said, lets plan something for the week of Feb 21st.
I live 20 minutes from the city; I would like to be part of the planning process.
Another thought would be our group size; are we talking 20 people, 100?! Answers to these questions could help narrow our search for a meeting place.
Last week of February sounds like a good idea. Not too close or too far and no holidays I can think of. I think doing the middle of the week might be most cost effective as well.
I can help with the planning also, if you like. Keep an eye peeled for a PM Mike. If anyone else has any thoughts send a PM to myself or Mikedelo and one of us will start a thread putting it all together.
Looks like we're getting started! :beer2:
I think realistically you should expect 5-10, at most 20. Figure out a convenient place and what kind of stuff you'd like to do, then set the time and see it happen.
I'm pretty sure I can't do it. Even if I'm in the city, the weekend would be the time I get to hang out with the friends I'll be visiting. Middle week is better, but that'll probably limit the number of the most locals I think.
I was about to ask, how are Sundays for everyone?
Weekends would be good for me, assuming I can get myself down there. I'd say I'd swing through Gugi-ville and pick him up, but, well, I'm afraid to be alone in an enclosed space with him for that long.
To whoever steps up and organizes; first let me say thank you in advance. I would also like to request that, wherever the event ends up being held, please try to make it a place where we can get some gear out and do some demo's. Shaving would be nice, honing would be very nice, anything resto would be extra nice (even just some hand sanding and tightening pins). Meet and Greets are awesome, but the best is when we can share the type of knowledge that doesn't come across too well via text on the internet.
I am interested in attending as well. I have a friend who owns a bar :beer2: restaurant in Brooklyn Heights. It is next to the Brooklyn Bridge. It has a private room that we could use. Sunday through Thursday should be no problem. Fridays and Saturdays are too busy.
Set the place and time ASAP, and the rest will follow. Sounds like Rmaldon may have a great lead for us.
That's what I'm hoping we can accomplish here. I'd like to see if folks are willing to bring along some gear and maybe even give a little instructional or something. If anyone who's interested in coming to the meet up already has hones and knows what they're doing, please chime in.
I think Mike and I are going to try to meet ahead of schedule to check out a place. What should we look for in a place? A bathroom fit to shave in? A table to be set up for honing?
As for chipping in, we might be able to get away with telling the place we'll all be buying drinks and run up a nice tab. :beer2:
Once there is a definate location and time I am sure we can all start to plan it out.
I am also in Westchester and would drive down to Brooklyn, if that place works out.
It's def a lot closer than Rochester....No offense Joed! That was an awsome meet. I am looking forward to another up North meet after the snow stops.
For show & tell we all sit around the dining room table and one person at a time passes their stuff one at a time to the right (or left). Then it goes around the table till it returns. Or we do the same standing around the island in the kitchen. Or, if someone is not comfortable with that, it can be done on a more one-on-one basis. For honing, it's nice to have a big table too, in case there is lots of gear and/or razors. Depending on how many people are there and who wants to see what, it can be good to have more than one thing going on at once to prevent anything from getting overcrowded. It would be nice if there was somewhere to shave, so, for example, if a new guy gets a blade or two honed up he can try it right away or guys can try each others blades to try a given razor and/or someones honing (and it's good to get feedback on your own edges, too).
Access to sinks is also nice in case hones need to be refreshed, and having containers to soak hones in is good too (but we'd bring those). Chairs are good, but not necessary, unless it's a long meet. If we are in a place where people can smoke, there may be pipe and/or cigar smokers that would bring and share things, but if not, that's no biggie. Having a nice cold beverage (or room temp, or hot) is also nice, but again, not necessary. Also, though I can't imagine it would be an issue, everyone should be responsible in how they conduct themselves and if/when people drive away.
Personally, I will bring locking boxes for my gear and keep an eye on who handles what and how. I may or may not bring/pull out my most prized razors and hone - I know we're all members of the SRP family, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I am in jersey down the shore so i can easily meet in or around the city. Im only an hour drive outside it. I would be happy to bring gear for peeps to try out and help out any newbs with there honing. Im not a pro like some of the guys here but i like to think i no what im doing. I hone all my own razrs and like to think they shave very well. I will keep an eye here to see what we all come up with as far as a time and place
I would definitely attend, especially in Brooklyn. If cigars are allowed, I'd bring cigars for those in attendence who smoke. I still have some 1999 HdM Du Prince left over from my Christmas giveaway.
Ok, I spoke to my Friend at 1 Front St. He is currently out of town but will be back tomorrow. He is pretty sure the calendar is good to go for February 21st from 12-4 but he will double check tomorrow. I think some of the guys want to check it out before hand. I will PM the details.
It's a great spot which we can configure to suit our needs. BUT the bathrooms are small. There are 2 bathrooms one is just to small to do anything in. The other would be fine but it's only one sink and one mirror. That could be a deal killer.
I will try hard to get to this meet. I'll keep an eye on this thread as plans firm up. Great stuff!
