First Successful Head Shave With A DE

Looks like 90-120 days of using my face as a practice field has developed my ability to shave well enough to do the old brain bucket without a single cut or nick, nowhere near as clean as the Mach 3 yet, but no irritation or anything, question for everyone, my eventual goal is to move into straight razors for head and face, how much of a learning curve is there moving from a DE to a Straight? I'm thinking another 45-60 shaves (average of one every other day) using a straight on my face would do the trick? Thanks in advance.

Congrats.. My head shaves with DE have improved since I bought a Merkur slant. Not so close with milder razors.

If there were more hours in the day I'd consider a straight for the dome but as I consider head shaving a bit of a chore the DE is quick & easy & suits me just fine.

CONGRATS . . . Currently using a Merkur on my dome, with occasional shaves using my Parkers (98 & 26C open comb). I used my Straight once, and will eventually be doing so full time but, for now, the DE is doing just fine.

What did you find to be the trouble? Were you using a cart before with no issues? Or was the whole bald thing something that coincided with the switch from carts?

Trouble spots were my own fault, experimenting around, but I usually find the back of the head most problematic, as well as right where the hair on top (what little is left) meets the hair on the side. I have been shaving my head since late 2008 with caetridges, I got a haircut in Afghanistan and my high & tight was pretty bad looking, so my platoon sergeant promised to shoot me if I didn't get it fixed, so ten minutes with a can of barbasol foam and a mach 3 and it was done, haven't gone back since. I figure I'm a bit too uoung for a horseshoe of hair to be stylish, skin is in!

Yeah, my gap is fore and aft, so it looks kind of silly if I would let it go. Had to keep reassuring my Barber that I really did want to take it down to the wood the first time. I hear you about the transition from top to sides . . . for me it's near the crown, grain is every which way possible.
I generally start at the back with an ATG pass all the way to the crown from ear to ear, followed by a W-E pass and an E-W pass, also ear to ear. I do not bother with a WTG pass as, by that point, it's pretty damn smooth back there.

I find that my hair on the back grows a bit strangely, the crown I can handle going from left to right, but it gets interesting trying to do a straight across the back of the head from the middle out, usually gets it bbs though, and my old lady loves that
