Default Bringing razor back to life

    Hi all,

I have a Dovo "Best Quality" 5/8" carbon steel razor that has some rust on the spine and shank that hasn't been used in a while. It has moderate hone wear on it's spine (it was my first blade and I ended up honing it a lot) and the bevel is fairly wide. The bevel at the toe and heel are even wider and seem uneven. I don't see any visible rust on the bevel or edge though and there are no visible chips in the blade. Does this sound salvagable? To the more experienced members: what would you suggest I do to get the rust off and get this razor shaving again? Unfortunately I don't have pictures. Does having a wider bevel affect the quality of the edge or shave at all? I suspect I'll just have to spend a few hours on the hones.

When I say "shaving again", I mean "shaving well". Since it was the first blade I got the honing job wasn't all that great and the shave always left irritation. Since then I picked up some unknown brand razor at an antique shop for $5 and managed to hone that one well and it shaves beautifully - I want that Dovo to shave just as well without the irritation I was getting before.

    Thanks!

It's a wild guess without a photo, as you know. If you think that the edge is not damaged, then remove the rust in any number of methods, from simple cloth & Mother's Chrome, to 0000 steel wool under water, to high grit wet/dry paper,,,see I cannot give you a specific path to take without seeing it. Since you know what it looks like, compare it to other problem razors in our restoration section.

I say lightly clean/remove the rust as best you can, then spend time in putting an edge on it. If it will not take a good edge, then why spend hours or days removing rust.

If the razor will take a good edge them save it , if not scrape it or send it to a professional.

Neon, new Dovo is not good. Stick to vintage blades especially FB
