I google, I search SRP, I scratch my head: is there such a thing as the Rare Rose Thuringian? This seller seems to get a lot of stones.....maybe has a lot of stones also.
I know there are some experts here on Thuringians, I hope they can illuminate this.
Corners are not chamfered & aweful thick for most thuringians I have ever seen. I've never seen a thuringian with all the shades and colors either, most are quite uniform. That stone just screams "found locally"...but I could be wrong as I wouldn't know until I put a razor across it. WOuld I want to try it for that kind of money...nope.
I bought a black thurigian from that seller. That is not what it was. I did however get a way better hone than that. What it actually is is a Pierre La Lune special hone for good razors only. It was not even a German hone, but a good one. He does sell a lot of hones. He said that an old barber told him it was a rose thurigian. It is a gamble for sure, the big question is how much do you spend on a mystery bag?

The people in the Thuringian region have never been shy when it comes to a commercial proposition. If it's not nailed down, it either gets cut square and sold as a hone or made into a sausage.
In this case, maybe they did both. Look familiar?

I think, at that price, it must be a very special Ripoff stone.
On a more serious note. It has one inclusion that looks like the ones in a Goldfisch hone. Especially the sides of the stone have a pattern that resembles a Schwedenstein. It does not look like rouge de Salm the only purplish razor hone I know
Henk vd Bos may tune in, he is an expert on European natural hones and sharpening stones.

Granite counter tops - never understood why she insisted on them. Made me go shopping and looking at all these huge different sheets of rock, many I really couldn't tell the difference between, but that rock in the picture looks pretty close to the 2.5 inches of granite running through the kitchen and kitchen dining area.Quote:

Interesting stone. Most Thuringans I've seen are homogeneous in color more often than not. Whatever that is, looks more liks some sort of hybrid.
I don't think that hone has anything to do with:
1. CFs
2. Thuringians
2. Vosgiennes
3. Schwedenstein
4. Pierre de Lorraine
5. Goldfisch/Wetzlar
etc, etc, etc.
6. Rose Thuringian - a figment of the imagination, as is the so-called welsh thuringian.
I don't even think it is from the continent of Europe, as I have only ever seen three or four examples, all in the UK, and all fixed to paddles. I have a similar one myself - it changes colour a lot when wet, is fairly soft, and gives a remarkably good edge. What it is - I couldn't tell you

Whatever this stone is, it is definately not a soft thuringian waterwhetstone that we all know, such as the Escher type hones. As pointed out in some other threads there are different hones and sharpening stones comming from the thuringian area that do have interesting colours - so I could not really exclude this to be a thuringian stone. But up to know - I have not seen such a stone with this texture and spots in any of the thuringian quarries I examinated.
Independed of this, just for information, the following pictures show a special thuringian hone with fantastic rainbow colors, that comes from one the very special ordovician quarries of the thruingian mountains.

wow that is pretty nice. If it hones as good as it looks that is an amazing hone.
Hatzicho - that ordovician rainbow-hued thuringian is a fantastic looking specimen.
With my mystery paddle hone the red-brown/yellow-brown/orange spots seem to be due to a high ferric oxide content.
What do you ascribe the rainbow hues to in your stone? I know that oil comes from some ordovician strata - do you think it could related to that?

Well Neil,
that's a question not easy to answer. There have been some examinations in the past concerning the chemical composition and color of different stratas of the thuringian stones in general. As for the devonian aged stratas as well as the ordovician stones in general the more darker colors gray to blue is caused by higher amounts of opake material, bitumen and ore. So your theory of oil occurance in the stone horizon is not far away.
On the other hand the ligther yellow and green colors belong to a higher content of mud in general, chlorite and leukoxen. The special purple and rainbow colors belong to trace elements that are found in the deposits, such as Ba, Cu and different sulphur oxides. So the rainbow colors are a mixture of all.
In general iron also ever occurs in higher amounts in the thuringian whetstone horizons, especially the ordovician ones.
