To make my post relevant, I'm asking how much magnification is needed to observe the physical differences above the 12K level?
I've got a cheapie 30x loupe and it's the only thing I know.

All I've ever relied upon is a 10X loupe. Edge differences beyond that resolution don't seem to have any impact on shave quality.
If you have a quality instrument 10x is plenty. Most of the time I use a 6x and it shows me everything I need to see.
