Thread: Lapping. Any reason I shouldn't do the following?

I and many others here, have been using Scotch Brite pad sponges to scrub off swarf for years with no problems. While the Scotch Brite may contain some abrasive, using it under running water will wash off any grit that may sluff off the sponge. You are not using enough pressure to imbed into the stone and even if you did, honing a razor would dislodge the grit on the first lap or two as the stones are friable, these are not finishing stone.

Either way, a diamond plate is the better way to go, a 6 inch plate can be purchased for as little ten dollars.

I am by no means an expert, but; assuming your barber hone is around 6-8k lapping it with a 12k naniwa would lap the naniwa woudnt it? Being thzt it is a finer grit, and also probably much softer, also the vaseline may contaminate the naniwa.
Hopefully someone will set me straight if i am off

As I said before, the instructions on my Swaty say, wash it off with soap and water, and if it gets really dirty, use very light grit sandpaper to clean it. No mention of lapping it????
