I teach the 4-8 Norton and shaved off them, or the 3-6 setup. A jump of 5k is just too much at the lower end.
1K 4K 8K and a nice finisher above that 6+or 8K is a winner. A natural hone above 8K is an unknown quality until; a person is really trained at the lower grits and has the bevel perfect..at that time a 12k CHUG is fine or any of the Thuringinan or finest slate hones.
