That's the same as I've read. Also, there is no translucence of any kind. Its probably the light reflecting off the freshly lapped surface(I took it to 2500K grit).

The Fernslers is a great hone! A lot of different companies distributed them. They were called the Ruby Hone because of the deep Red Color. Here is what they look like brand new:

Although the picture I took makes the hones look brown in color, they are actually a very bright red/maroon color.
@WP: can you post the instructions ? Never saw the original ones.....
