Nothing except the metal clamp-on frame. The leather is that thick! :D I suppose a thin cardboard on the inside of the metal frame is good to protect the hone.
Easy, boys! There is a reason they reside in the 'Sack 'O Sheffields! :rofl2:

this is what i got, im pretty happy with it.
my plan is to lightly sand back the strop and then use dubbin to refresh the leather.
what would the best way to clean the stone side of it be? wd 40 and a lap?

Dooey, I just finished a week long refurbish of one, with photos. I was going to make a PDF file today & upload it to SRP, then give you a shout,,, but it will take a hour for me to write the PDF & I'm tired now,,,, if you wait till tomorrow nite, you can see how I clean them up. I also have another I started on yesterday, I let the leather dry a week before I condition it.
I would not put WD-40 on the hone,,,,,& don't lap it unless there is a good reason,,,,I'll have this in the PDF tomorrow.
Here is a PDF file that will give you some options on cleaning up that hone.

Excellent write up John
Job well done
Just a quick question Hirlau. Why do you wait so long before conditioning the strop?
Well,,, I don't have any leather working background , so I took an uneducated guess the first time that I conditioned an old pair of boots many years ago. I had used saddle soap to clean them & I wanted to condition them as to help against cracking. I wanted the leather to be giving , flexible again so I went with Kiwi leather conditioner to do this; it seemed to work fine for the old boots & over the years it worked great, putting life back into ballgloves & my belts. I waited so long, about 7 days so the leather would be as dry as possible; I figured that this would allow the leather to absorb more of the conditioner; instead of applying conditioner to a piece of leather that still contained moisture from the cleaning.
I could be wrong in my handling of the leather in this manner, I feel that a leatherman like HidesToArt or Neil probably has a better way or may say that my procedure is wrong, if it is, then I will gladly change to their suggested method. My projects have turned out well with this method, so I hope I am doing it right.
