Are you talking purely storage or storage + used as stand.
I make all sorts of things from wood. My stones are never stored away though, always being used. Making boxes has never crossed my mind.
What you plan to do with it will impact what type of wood and finish you should use. Purely storage you could do amlost anything,

Another consideration...
Make sure you account for residual moisture in the hones. A hone that is mostly dry is still slightly wet.
I realize that is a brilliant observation I just made.
I guess a dual function box would make most sense for me. Storage and usage.
I would use a hardwood with a good waterproof finish.
How toxic of a coating you want is up to you. Marine varnish would last forever but destroys brain cells like crazy.
Linseed oil perhaps?

I make boxes for all of my good stones. I usually trace the stone out on a piece of wood then cut it out with a scroll saw then add a thin top and bottom. As far as finishing, it just depends. The two Ambrose maple boxes below were finished with 1 thinned coat of golden pecan stain, (thinned so it really soaks into the wood) followed by a regular coat of golden pecan, then 4 coats of tung oil. The oak box simply has one coat of minwax.
Wow! Nice boxes!
