Oh, and I use mine for kitchen knives sometimes, gives a pretty good edge there. The honing feel/feedback on slurry is pretty nice. With knives and a little more pressure it will self-slurry a little bit.
These DBs come in quite a range, I've one that's coarse enough for bevelsetting and I had 2 fine enough for finishing. I assume most are in the middle.
Spray it down with oven cleaner and scrub a couple of times, wash in soapy water, then soak in simple green, I use tall thin glass or plastic jars with lids from the thrift store.
Oven cleaner will get a lot of the surface grit and oil off. Once in the jars or tub, setting in the sun will speed the process.
Long ago when I only had an Arkansas surgical black for honing I would degrease it in the dishwasher. Works a treat.
