Hard to tell from those pics. To me they seem coarse hones that I would not expose my razors to.
Attachment 209248Attachment 209249The light color one yes is slightly course however the dark color is very smooth and may be hard arkansas see addtl pics next to the labeled Norton arkansas. Same exact size..
1st stone is a hindostan.
Last one - it can be an arkansas due to type of chips.
Yes, the conchoidal fractures indicates a very hard and dense stone. Probably hard arkansas. Obsidian and translucent arkansas also chip the same way
Nice stones, sir. Exciting finding a batch in the wild! thanks for sharing.

I have actually just done it again.. 1h 45m drive for 10 stones and a lot of tools which I left behind to owner who had sentimental value.. Could see the familiar markings of an SR. droescher box so took the ride. Was better than expected as there was a coti I didn't see some carborundum and 4 razor hones pretty basic
I'm looking forward to the pics.
It's good to hear of someone having some success. Friday I went looking for homes at antique stores. Passed on an overpriced oil home and a couple of beat up barber hones. I bought a grungy Swaty for real cheap, but it turned out pretty bad when cleaned off.
Still driving home but this is what made me go..
Yes, interesting bunch. The box in the cigar box looks very promising.

On the first post the large chipped one, is probably a Black Ark. Don’t lap it, just bevel the corners and put a large carbon steel knife on it. If you don’t feel any chips, put a razor on it. If you lap it you will lose all the years of burnish.
Glue some 80 grit wet & dry to a piece of 5 gal paint stir stick and some 220 to the other side and bevel the edges, don’t touch the face until you test it. You can clean it with a Simple Green soak.
Nice find on both.
After cleaning up everything from yesterday by soaking in almost straight simple green and sitting in 90 deg sun all day here is what I have. I know one is a large 8x2 coti and bbw that need to be glued together but do seem to be a pair and was in a box. Couple small arks. And 2 I have no idea on. One looks like a hard ark the big black one but may be a type of slate. Maybe the pic of the bottom will help show the type of stone. Also a nice grey one I am not sure about. Also a nice yellow lake can tell by the green spots..
