My experience is limited to synthetics, Cotis, Trans Arkies and some Jnats. So I have no real idea what this one is. Any ideas?

Based on the first photo only,, maybe an 8" man made barber hone,,, the color & shape ???
Pretty close there Hirlau, TAT, do you have a USB Microscope? so as to take some closeup pics? and dimensions may help. Oh, is that small stone a slurry stone that came with it?
I would vote for a slate type...probably a UK slate...
Where did you bought that one ?
Based on the saw marks in photo 2, I don't think it's a synthetic. I'd think a natural, but not really sure of the origin.
Here's a link to some images that claim "brown", but how relevant? I'm not sure.
* Olivia's Natursteine *
Give it a try and compare it to your other "known" performance stones and see how it measures up. Hardness, fineness, quality of shave, slurry color, etc. etc..
Look forward to your observations and comparisons. :D
Also, very likely that some member here will have or know exactly what it is that you have.
Regards,
Howard :)
My guess was focussed on the sawmarks too..
Here on of my UK slates which resamples a Yellow Lake stone in terms of working properties the most

Actually its as always, we can only rely on indentifiers and coloration...in the end youll find out more details when testing the stones...
Hehe, I had a Duhh moment last night, was a pic of the end of the stone........
My USB microscope is not the best quality but here are a few pics.

If you forced me to guess, I'd say it is British in origin.
The surface appearance is in line with certain uk slates. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. Some of them are far finer than people on these forums tend to give them credit for. Mainly because the market has been flooded with a lot of underwhelming stuff.
Looks like a black Thuri to me. Exactly like this one:

And this stone is:

A black 12 inch Escher!
Of course your stone could also be something entirely else! But it is a slate for sure, that also prove the typical microscope pics. Congrats to that find!

The Holy Grail
Wow
Bring it to Charlie's Razor Workshop in Feb. Then we can give a definitive identification.
Here you go :)

Does it slurry? What color?
From the scratches on the face, looks soft, saw mark on the side & looks Thüringen sized, it’s a slate.
The other dark stone you have is the interesting one. That looks like a hard finisher…
Does that one slurry?
They're all pics of the same stone actually. I used it last night for the first time after a progression of 1k, 5k, 8k. I did 50 x strokes on just water and there didn't seem to be much improvement but then I did 50 or so more on dmt slurry and that made a hell of a difference. Really took care of the 8k scratches. I'm gonna shave here in a bit and see how she goes. I tried taking pics with my USB microscope of the final edge bit it's a cheap one and I couldn't get good pics and gave up out of frustration lol. I'll try again. The slurry gets good and creamy and is a dark gray color. Attachment 220061
Yea, that’s a slate probably a Thüringen, should be a nice finisher, try some Smith’s Honing solution just a 2-3 drops on a wet stone. Really gives a nice polish.
I’m talking about the other black stone with rust colored streaks that you posted in the other thread. It looks like some hard Jnats I have seen.
Perhaps similar to this one I recently scored: note the unfinished side and archive number. Still not sure what it is yet either:

Ah ok. Haven't played with that one too much yet. I'm pretty concerned though about all the fissures and the one side that seems like it would be most usable has a strange texture. The comparison that comes to mind are the ridges in your skin when it'a been in water too long. Maybe I can lap past it. It doesn't seem nearly as hard as my Ozuku Asagi but that one's super hard. Someone said it might be an Aoto and someone said Turkish oilstone. I'll report back after I get to play with it some more. Here's a pic of the slurry. Oh and btw the Genco Fluid Steel I honed on the possible Thuri gave an excellent shave. I think I'm really gonna dig this rock. I'll pick up some Smiths and give that a go as well. Thanks again for the input :)Attachment 220067
