    My experience is limited to synthetics, Cotis, Trans Arkies and some Jnats. So I have no real idea what this one is. Any ideas?

    Pretty close there Hirlau, TAT, do you have a USB Microscope? so as to take some closeup pics? and dimensions may help. Oh, is that small stone a slurry stone that came with it?

    I would vote for a slate type...probably a UK slate...

    Where did you bought that one ?

    Based on the saw marks in photo 2, I don't think it's a synthetic. I'd think a natural, but not really sure of the origin.

    Here's a link to some images that claim "brown", but how relevant? I'm not sure.

    * Olivia's Natursteine *

    Give it a try and compare it to your other "known" performance stones and see how it measures up. Hardness, fineness, quality of shave, slurry color, etc. etc..

    Look forward to your observations and comparisons.

    Also, very likely that some member here will have or know exactly what it is that you have.

    My guess was focussed on the sawmarks too..

    Here on of my UK slates which resamples a Yellow Lake stone in terms of working properties the most

    Actually its as always, we can only rely on indentifiers and coloration...in the end youll find out more details when testing the stones...

    Got it at an auction with several razors, a coticule bout, small trans arkie, and another unknown stone.
